Mary and Simeon at Deb & Harry's wedding
Debra Vetters-Kirchner
April 28, 2008
Dear Ohana,
As we know, Simeon was famous for his incredible ti leaf leis, but for me he will be remembered for the rich memories he wove into my life, memories highlighted by humor, warmth and generosity of spirit.
The first incident that comes to mind is that of Simeon singing and playing the pink and turquoise ukulele he and Dottie had given me for my 7th Christmas. I was just young enough to be convinced - as he assured me - that he really WAS Don Ho.
Years later "The Great Entertainer" starred again when Cathy and I volunteered Simeon to demonstrate the hula to an audience of tourists at The Polynesian Cultural Center. Without batting an eyelash, he grinned, took the stage, put on the grass skirt and gave a dynamite demo that brought the audience to their feet.
It meant so much to me that Dottie, Simeon and Monica journeyed all the way across the Pacific to Texas for our wedding. Their warmth and support during all the pre-wedding frenzy kept us on a "relative" even keel - a stunning achievement to say the least.
While on our honeymoon in Hawaii, Harry and I reunited with the Nae'ole Ohana. Of the many lovely experiences that we shared, the one that stands out was the afternoon that Simeon took us horseback riding on the ranch. I am more afraid of horses than king cobra's. Even though he held the reins, how Simeon convinced me to actually ride one is a tribute to my trust in him and his strength of character.
So I have this wreath of loving memories with me even though he is no longer here with us. I feel that our loss is heaven's gain.
Mahalo my uncle,
Love,
Deb

Simeon,
Congratulations on your arrival in the Promised Land! You certainly earned it. Wow- what a tough guy!
Do you remember one time in 1968 or '69 we were all having a good time at the Bauer's Christmas party in Refugio? Everyone was dancing. All of a sudden, everyone quit dancing and formed a circle around one couple in the center of the dance floor. After moving in for a better look, guess what I saw? It was "Twinkle Toes Simeon" and sister-in-law Joan Austin dancing the Charleston. In this day and age, you guys could have been on "Dancing with the Stars!"
When you see Marie, tell her Josh and I are doing well, but we really miss her! Of course, she probably already knows that! Also, give Mrs. Slom and Charles a hug for us. What fine folks they were.
And Dottie, don't worry!! Everything will work out as part of God's plan.

Dear Uncle Simeon,
Wow! I cannot believe that you are gone! You were a beautiful flower that was picked way to soon from the earth. You touched each life that you encountered and were such a positive ray of sunshine. Now there is a little brighter star in the heavens and a new guardian angel for us all!
Until we meet again my friend!

My Uncle Simeon, I've never met anyone with such peace from within. Years would pass between visits and you always made me feel like we had not missed a single day of visiting. All of my childhood friends that had the opportunity to meet you over the years felt blessed to know you and when I would mention your name to them, their faces would always light up and they would ask about you. I've remembered for 30+ years the day at Six Flags in Dallas when you held on to me when I was terrified/horrified on the "Kiddy Roller Coaster", never forgot that day, thanks. A big man of peace, I wish you continued peace. With Love, Mike

Dear Uncle "Cinnamon",
How is heaven? I bet you are making ti leaf leis for all of the angels. I think of you every time that I see my ti leaf lei that you made - it is hanging in our kitchen. I am going to miss your super hugs, big smile and the "big eyes" that you made when we played chase or "got you last". When you see Uncle Bunkle and Granny Jo up there in heaven give them a kiss for me. I miss you with all of my heart but I know that you are in a better place now.
Hugs and Kisses,
XOXOXOXOXOX
