Sir John Joseph Frank McCue, III Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Apr. 19 to Apr. 23, 2023.
Sir John Joseph Frank McCue, III Sir John Joseph Frank McCue, III died peacefully in his Athens, Georgia home on March 26, 2023.

John was the second child of Florence Hollander McCue and Joseph Frank McCue who lived in Colt's Neck, New Jersey, where he was born. His family moved to Pasadena, California in the early 1950's. John attended the local Pasadena schools and graduated from UC Davis and obtained his Master's degree from Berkeley. He had an exciting and fulfilling start in his career at IBM, after which he left to start McCue Systems, at the time an up-and-coming software company that was responsible for significant program advances in the development of software designed for banks. After selling his company in the mid-2000's, he enjoyed an early retirement that allowed him time to focus on his beloved classic car collection and provided him the opportunity to visit with friends here and abroad. He loved to travel.

John was the President of the Northern California Car Club, and was actively involved in the Palm Springs California Car Club. He had life-long friends in both clubs and always had wonderful confessions about how difficult it was to resist adding to his collection, if the right automobile caught his fancy, which frequently occurred.

John had a wonderful home in Half Moon Bay for 35 years. Two years ago, John moved to Athens, Georgia to start a new career on a lovely estate that he had hoped to market for a wedding and/or banquet venue. Sadly, he succumbed to a post-operative infection after years of taking good care of his health and was not to see the fruition of his dream.

John was predeceased by his parents and his only brother, Gordon Lee McCue. He is survived by a longtime friend, Joseph H. Plesa, who was at his side when John passed; two wonderful nephews, Sean McCue of Scarborough, Maine and Colin McCue of Denver, Colorado. He is also survived by a great nephew, Patrick McCue. He remained close to his sister-in-law, Elizabeth Voigt-McCue "Betsy," after his brother's death. He had fun visits in Maine with his brother's kids and step-children and he was appreciated for his humor and his "tall stories," which he loved to weave. We will miss him.

A memorial service to celebrate John's life will be held on Saturday, April 29, at 1:00 p.m., at Skylawn Memorial Park in San Mateo, California. A private service will be held on Sunday, May 7 in Palm Springs, California.

My first memory was his welcoming me to his 10,000 sq. ft. solid redwood "home office" in Hillsborough CA in 1978. He recalls that I noted I wasn't sure how one could operate a business there and he knew he was in "trouble" if I were to be on the staff::)) Our biz connection continued for 11 yrs and the friendship until his passing in 2023.

I was John's second employee and enjoyed many years under John's tutelage. The company grew from 3 people involved in developing custom programs to a diversified group creating accounting software that we marketed nationwide. John was a knowledgeable leader who imparted his quest for excellency.
I have many wonderful memories of those years and am thankful for John and his vision.
Rest in peace John.

John was an amazing and loving friend and businessman. We worked together for 11 years (I was administrative manager, sales rep, and all-around Person Friday). We each learned a lot and valued one another's special skills and personality. My association with John was a key reason that our company succeeded during our working together, and I am forever indebted to him for his always "giving me enough rope to swing to the next highest level as a sales person" and also to launch my career after leaving McCue to become a fundraiser for several important life-enhancing missions. As could be expected, John and my husband, Jeff, and I continued to be good friends for as long as he lived in California, more than 40 years. Rest peacefully, dear John
