SOL RUBEN Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Sep. 1 to Sep. 2, 2017.
RUBEN SOL H.
On Thursday, August 31, 2017. Longtime men's clothier Sol H. Ruben will be remembered as a loving family man and a hard worker for numerous nonprofit organizations and volunteer organizations. But, most of all, he will be remembered by his friends and former employees as one of Pittsburgh's original "super salesman," a man with an incredible knack for sizing up and meeting every customer's needs. A Columbus, Ohio native born April 1, 1915, he purchased a Brooks Menswear store in 1945 at Fifth and Court Place in downtown Pittsburgh and later renamed his store, Stylebrook Store for Men. Years later, he moved the store to Fifth Ave near Smithfield and, subsequently, renamed it American Discount Corp. In its incarnation, he carried top men's national name brands at discounted prices. His customers came from as far away as Maryland, West Virginia, Ohio, and Washington, D.C., and they even included men working at the White House under President Harry S. Truman. Mr. Ruben once said he had no hobbies, yet his "spare" time was spent by his involvement with a large number of social and charitable organizations. He served as Chairman of the Board of the Tri-State Zionist Region, President and board member of the Jewish Home and Hospital for the Aged (now the Charles Morris Center), board member of Israel Bonds, volunteer with the United Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh, Vice President, board member, and trustee of the Jewish Assistance Fund, 25-year board member of the Pittsburgh Hearing, Speech and Deaf Services, Inc., 50 year member and Vice President of the Downtown Lions Club, member of the Downtown Businessmen's Association, and member of Rodef Shalom Congregation and its brotherhood. In return for some of his efforts he received the Israel Service Award from the Zionist Organization of America, and in 2001, the Jewish Association on Aging included him as one of the "Eight over 80" whom the group honored for donating his time to its work. In 2011, Mr. Ruben moved to Weinberg Terrace, a personal care home in Squirrel Hill, where he was a member of the food committee. Every morning he awoke promptly at 5:50 a.m. to start his daily exercise regime and have breakfast. He was always on time for any activity and gave his honest opinion about performances. Mr. Ruben was preceded in death by his first wife, Florrine Silberstein Ruben, his second wife, Ethel Cohen Heller Ruben; his stepson, Mark Heller; his stepgrandson, Dr. Richard Lehman; his brothers, Alvin Ruben and Bernard Ruben; and his brother-in-law, Murray Ebner. He is survived by his two daughters, Barbara (June Roy) Ruben, of Middletown, CT and Judy (Dr. Barry) Alpert, of Pittsburgh; his sister, Sylvia Ebner, of Columbus, OH; his sisters-in-law, Faye Ruben and Florine Ruben, of Columbus, OH; his stepdaughter, Clare Lehman, of Scottsdale, AZ; nine grandchildren; and stepgrandchildren and many great-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews. Services were held at Rodef Shalom Temple. Interment West View Cemetery of Rodef Shalom Congregation. The family suggests that contributions be made to the Sol Ruben Scholarship Fund at Rodef Shalom Congregation, 4905 Fifth Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15213 or to The Jewish Assistance Fund, P.O. Box 8197, Pittsburgh, PA 15217. Arrangements entrusted to RALPH SCHUGAR CHAPEL, INC.

My Uncle Irv, Irwin Rabinowitz, z'l", and Sol were very close friends for many years in Pittsburgh. Irv passed away at age 96 on May 1, 2017 in Los Angeles, and shortly thereafter I looked up Sol online to see if he was still alive. I ended up speaking with his stepson, Mark Heller, z'l", who predeceased Sol by only two weeks, and who put me in touch with Sol, telling me that he was then an amazing 107 years of age.

When Sol picked up the phone, his voice sounded just as I remembered. Though hard of hearingm mentally he was still sharp as a tack. He was happy to hear from me, remembered me as Irv's nephew and remembered my mother, Ruthe, Irv's kid sister. He wanted to know about Uncle Irv's life in California and was sad but philosophical about his recent death.

I only learned of Sol's passing today, and was shocked to read of Mark's as well.

My very belated and sincere condolences to Clare and the rest of his family.

I first met Sol when my mother took me to his store, "American Discount Clothing, 5th Avenue opposite the Warner Theater" as the radio spots said, to buy me a suit for my Bar Mitzvah in 1961. By the time I was in college, I spent several summers and even more winter breaks working for Sol in the store. Sol was a very sweet man outside of the store, but once inside, he was all business -- very strict and formal. Because of his professional qualities, and incredible work ethic, I learned a lot: good customer service, how to fit men's suits, how to run the stock rooms, and how to work with the wonderful, salt-of-the-earth immigrants in the tailor shop downstairs, who made it possible for buyers to wait for the efficient alterations to their newly purchased suits.

I well remember Ethel, Mark, and Clare, all of whom worked in the store at one time or another during my time there.

Uncle Sol, what can I say......he lived a life only folks can dream of. Not only was he a financial success, but he served as a Hillel to everyone he touched in his life, mine included. I have owned a coin shop downtown for 37 years located under his tiny office that was in the Standard Life Building at 4th and Smithfield. He was my teacher, not only professionally, but personally. He and I shared many conversations and views that run the gamit. Thinking of him always brings a smile to my face, and that will continue for the duration of my life. I had much love for Sol, but I will stand in line, for it is a long, long one. I hope and pray that he is now with Ethel and all the people that impacted his life. I pray that all his goodness and qualities carry on in each and every one of us in our daily lives going forward.
