Solomon Levin Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from May 28 to May 29, 2007.
LEVIN, Solomon Abraham (April 22, 1935 - May 25, 2007) A significant life journey has ended for Sol. He has touched so many lives in so many ways, none moreso than his family. In each of his children his zeal for medicine, art and business will live on. He loved the elements of sun and water and all they represented. His passion for books, art, poetry and sports and his dedication to his patients was unsurpassed. As a psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, he was a mentor and innovative educator, a visionary, a spiritually insightful person, compassionate healer, lover of family, food and wine and most recently, all the little things in life. Valda, Adeera and Morley, Simon and Laurie, Malcolm and Sharon, Benjamin, Phoebe and Terra, as well as Raymond and Vivienne, Deanne and Clive, nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, and Lorraine, his dear friend and colleague, will miss him tremendously. Special thanks to all the patients, friends and family who shared their kind words with Sol during his illness and gave solace to his family. Thanks also to the Edmonton and Vancouver based Palliative Care Teams who helped him and ensured his dignity and comfort in his last days. In appreciation of the care he received in both Edmonton and Vancouver, and his dedication to medical education, he requested that donations be made to either: Alberta Cancer Foundation, c/o Dr. Sharon Watanabe, Cross Cancer Institute for Palliative Care Education, Edmonton, Alberta or St. Paul's Hospital, Vancouver, British Columbia, Renal-Palliative Initiative (Education) c/o Dr. Daphne Lobb. Donations to the charity of one's choice will also be gratefully accepted. The funeral service will be held at the Chesed Shel Emeth (Chevra Kadisha Chapel) 12313-105 Avenue, Edmonton, Alberta at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 29th, 2007. Burial will follow the service at the Edmonton Jewish Cemetery, 7622-101 Avenue.

Dear Dr. Levin, how I wish I had known you were ill. I was waiting on sending that postcard until I could also send news that I was expecting. That was one thing I really looked forward to. Just letting you know how wonderful Jeff and I were doing, how joyful life has been. Thank you so much for being who you were, I don't believe anyone else could have helped as you did. You will remain in my thoughts and heart.
My deepest condolences to your family.

Sol is a remarkable & special man. His faith guarantees his place with God. He taught me so much, which I'll keep close forever. I was given one of his texts on Psychiatry, which I'll treasure. Thank you, Sol.
My sympathies to your family.

Sol touched my life, and helped to change my life. His insight was matched by his dignity and his faith in humans. He was a wonderful person, and his wisdom and kindness will live on in reflection in me.

To Doctor Levin's family: My sincere condolences for the passing of Doctor Levin. He was truly a magnificent man, a great human being and friend. He walked with me through the dark places and celebrated with me in the light. He mirrored back to me the pieces of myself that I had forgotten, my own sense of personal integrity and dignity. His presence is with me and I still access his guidance. I loved talking to him about books, travel and religious thought and teachings. From our conversations, I know that he was not afraid of death or dying and I am sure he is with people who have been waitng for him to continue the next phase of his journey. Those left behind, especially those closest, must manage the loss of his physical presence. May you hold your grief gently and may the soft summer breezes and warm sun ease your sorrow. I feel truly blessed to have known him.

I feel this loss and feel for your loss. Sol was a remarkable man who was guided by a sense of humanity, respect and kindness. His legacy to me is to know that I will strive to be the best I can be in every part of my life, in relationship with patients, family, and friends, those that I love. I learned so much from him about dignity and grace and am grateful that he had the generosity of spirit and strength to say a last goodby. I will always be grateful for the time that I knew him.
