Solveig Haugland Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 29, 2015.
Solveig Laura Haugland passed away at age 48 of natural causes on August 9th in Lafayette, Colorado. Solveig was born in Boulder, Colorado, the daughter of Palmer and Ethelyn Haugland. She grew up in Juneau, Alaska and Kalispell, Montana, graduating from Flathead High School in 1985. At Concordia College in Moorhead, Minnesota, Solveig toured with the Concordia College choir and received a BA in French and Communications in 1989. She worked as a technical writer and editor for Great Plains Software, and in 1997, moved to Lafayette to work as a course developer for Sun Microsystems. She authored over twenty books, including the Open Office Guidebook, and used her knack for explaining complex processes in simple and humorous terms to pen several nontechnical books such as Dating Power Tools. Solveig loved snowshoeing, skiing, camping, hiking in and around Estes Park, and returning home to her two cats. She hashed with sartorial flair with the Flatlanders and Boulder Hashers; she danced Lindy Hop and the Blues; and she played a mean hand of euchre or whist. A knitter of astonishing speed, skill, and originality, she masterminded several popular local knit-bombs. She was a fearless formulator of witty songs and original cocktails, serving up both with generosity, to the delight of many. Passionate about social justice, she entertained friends and infuriated foes on Facebook in well-reasoned and witty arguments for civil rights. Solveig visited Kalispell often to spend time with her parents; their relationship was one of great kindness and mutual respect, and later in her parents' lives, she cared for them with strength and compassion. Solveig lived life with originality, intelligence, irrepressible wit, a sense of adventure, and a boundless consideration for those she loved. She had a keen appreciation of the ludicrous, and would have snorted with delight that an obituary can sound so much like a dating site profile. She is survived by several cousins and many friends. A memorial service is planned in her honor for September 12th in Boulder, Colorado. Contributions may be made in her memory to the Society of Women Engineers. She will be missed.

I bought Solveig's Open Office book and was so impressed with her grasp of how to present the complex simply.

I am sorry she is gone. I am sure it is even a greater sadness for those who knew her better than I did. May you be comforted.

Solveig was a valued member of our Audio/visual department at Concordia College. I was the manager at the time, and our student workers were the best. I am sorry to hear of her passing. My thoughts and prayers to her family.

Solveig was a classmate of mine at Concordia. I admired her strength and wit. I remember her great debates and this obituary honors her perfectly. My sympathies to the Haugland family.

Soveig played poker at our weekly poker table in the early days. As this was mostly men, it took a little thick skin to tolerate it. Everyone liked Solveig and being that I'm also 48, I find this particularly shocking. My condolences.

I have fond memories of Solveig at HHH runs, and I will always appreciate the wonderful debates that she sparked on Facebook. She touched my life only briefly, but in so many ways memorably. We send our deepest condolences and sympathies to her family and friends. She will be missed!

I met Solveig in high school. We had a few classes together and I got to know her better on the Speech and Debate team. I reconnected with her on Facebook a few years back when I found out that we only lived about 50 miles apart in Colorado. I was fortunate enough to get together with her a couple times for a beer or coffee over the last two years. However, I certainly wish I had been able to spend more time with her. She will be missed.

I wish that I would have lived closer to Solveig to get to know her better.I have a good memory of her when she joined us cousins in song at the celebration of my parents, (her Aunt and Uncle's) 50th anniversary, many years ago. I communicated with her through Christmas pictures cards with letter, then also during the loss of her Mother and later her Father, Palmer, my dad's youngest brother. We missed not being able to see her when we were out to Kalispell to visit with her Mom and Dad when they were alive, such wonderful people they were. I have admired Solveig for her technical talent and the success she was able to achieve through it. I am sorry that she is gone.

Sending my sincerest condolences to the family and friends of a wonderfully spirited person who I never had the pleasure of meeting face to face but enjoyed immensely on social media.
