Sonja Hinshaw Green, of
Plano, TX was welcomed into heaven on September 20th, 2023. Sonja was born in
Fort Worth, Texas on December 10th, 1938, to Brantley and Beaulah Hinshaw of Arlington, TX.
Sonja grew up in Arlington and attended Arlington State College and The University of North Texas, where she earned her degree in Education. She then pursued her master classes at the University of Hawaii. During her time in college, Sonja was a majorette, played the French horn in the marching band, and was a member of Alpha Phi sorority. She was also installed as program chairman for the New Morningside chapter of Phi Mu, was a representative of Christian Fellowship House of Arlington State College, was an All-School favorite, Yucca Beauty nominee, ROTC Sweetheart, Beta Sigma Phi - Valentine Sweetheart, and a member of Avolente Social Club. Sonja loved spending her summers as a counselor at Camp 'Mo' Ranch in Kerrville.
After Sonja returned from her studies in Hawaii, she began her pursuit of her passion for education and civic service, teaching elementary students at Roark Elementary in Arlington, TX. In the summers she worked as a secretary for Rustic Fence, where she met the love of her life, Don Green, whom she later married on June 9th, 1962, at First Baptist Arlington. They began their life together in Highland Park before deciding to begin their own business and plant roots in
Plano, TX. Shortly after they settled in Plano, their son, Chad was born, and a few years later, their daughter Courtney was born. Grass never grew under Sonja's feet and her heart was drawn back to service, she became quite involved in their church and worked with the Republican National Committee. The business of raising two children kept Sonja busy but she always found time for her friends, Bible studies, speaking events, and working with Christian Gateways Ministries. Sonja wholeheartedly believed in being involved as a civic duty and volunteered on several political campaigns for dear friends. As the children entered high school Sonja's love for teaching drew her back to her passion of education our youth. She eventually retired from teaching 4th grade at Richardson Terrace Elementary, soon after her first granddaughter was born.
In retirement, Sonja's zest for the Lord and her friends continued to blossom. She traveled the country speaking with several ministries, continued volunteering as a poll greeter, and spent endless evenings joyfully arranging flowers for her friends' children's weddings. She was an incredibly talented woman who loved big!
Sonja and Don moved to Round Rock, in 2016, following Don's stroke, to be closer to their daughter, Courtney, and granddaughter, Avery. Sonja's desire to volunteer never dissipated and she was nominated as one of the top 10 volunteers in Travis and Williamson Counties in 2018. She was quoted as saying "Dream and plan but be special where you are, for season of life passes so quickly. 'Carpe Diem,' seize the day, for each is so precious."
Sonja is survived by her son, Chad Green, and his wife, Amy, and their children, Shiloh and Noah Shelton, and her daughter, Courtney Eastman, and granddaughter, Avery Eastman, and daughter-in-love, Belinda Green.
