Sophia Favela Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 21, 2014.
In Memory of Sophia Y. Favela

Sophia Yvette Favela was born October 25th 1981 at Riverside General Hospital in Riverside, Ca. The Lord called her back Wednesday, October the 15th 2014. Though Sophia was currently residing in the Sacramento area with her aunt and uncle, the majority of her life was spent in Riverside. Sophia is survived by her parents Virginia and Joe Favela, her five younger sisters Natalie, Vanessa, Lucia, Christina and Rachel, her two brothers Victor and Scott and her nephew Ethan.

Growing up in Riverside, Sophia attended school at Twinhill Elementary, Loma Vista Middle School and Norte Vista High School where she was successful in creating lasting connections and friendships with everyone she came in contact with. Sophia's unwavering loyalty and support of her friends only nurtured the already blossoming bond they all shared. Years and years later Sophia and her friends would still meet for movie nights, holiday parties and any other random gatherings they could come up with. The pride Sophia felt for her friends was clear to everyone as she would always talk about them, make sure to document their gatherings and post about all the new babies being added to the happy group of friends.

Sophia was the eldest of seven children with a 12 year age difference between her and the youngest. Sophia was not only a loving and caring sister and an assistant mother but her sibling's best friend. Though there were years to separate her from her siblings, Sophia connected with each and every one of them as though they were twins. From a very young age Sophia helped taking care of all her siblings and she continued that loving practice even as her sisters and brothers grew older. Whether it was supporting her sisters in their many sports games, planning and cooking the holiday dinners for her family, being the designated photographer for all the gatherings or planning the next vacation, Sophia never wanted her family to do without.

The closeness Sophia had with her siblings didn't stop there because she always felt there was more love to give. Sophia didn't really have cousins because they were more like extra brothers and sisters. There was no way they weren't going to get a piece of her personality; she just wouldn't stand for it. The love and protectiveness she felt for her cousins, young or old, was probably only paralleled to their respective siblings and parents. Because of Sophia's beautiful and strong personality, her siblings were blessed with a colorful immediate family life but also extended family life. Christmas' at the Favela's were blessed with a few extra kids and when most kids at sleep overs with their friends, Sophia had her cousins come over. She was fun and excited about life, always wanting to celebrate something. Her compassion and beautifully loud laugh always lit up the room and no party started until she arrived, which was usually with bells on as she would joke.

Sophia's wit and silliness is one of her biggest signatures. There is hardly anything you could say without Sophia either turning it into a joke, a movie quote or singing a song with matching lyrics. She could carry on a full conversation with just movie quotes or lyrics from her favorite songs. She taught all her siblings what great music and movies were; they had no choice but to listen and watch. Sophia had such a vibrant and loud personality from such a young age that most people naturally gravitated towards her and most ended up staying there. Sophia's brain and heart were quite unique; she seemed all knowing and all loving. She was so many people's "go-to" person because if she didn't already know it, she was so competitively hungry for knowledge that she would instantly go figure whatever it was out.

Though this is such a hard loss for her family and friends, Sophia's strong faith in God's will brings comfort. Sophia was a faithful traditional Roman Catholic who tried to better herself no matter what past mistakes were made or current heartaches felt. Sophia held tight to her faith no matter what was happening in life. She owned up to her mistakes and did her best to correct them and move past it. Sophia saw every one as a child of God and never held people's faults, mistakes or insecurities against them but instead loved them, supported them, cheered them on and did her best to guide them to a life of faith and hope. Sophia's prayers were always dedicated to her family and friends before herself. For all those who felt her love and light here on Earth will now feel her heavenly guidance from above. Sophia would never leave those she loved alone and so lucky for us Sophia had a huge heart with so much love to give. Truly an angel from above being called back home, Sophia will rest easy as she watches her loved ones grow and prosper in life.

May Sophia rest in peace and have perpetual light shine upon her.

To our lovely Sophia: It has been almost two weeks since your passing and my pain and heartache has not eased a bit. It still feels like a bad dream. Just know that I will always remember our times laughing at nothing or laughing at something that wasn't very funny at all. Our movies and songs have even more meaning to me now and I will never forget them. You deserved to be here with your family and friends, achieving the unachievable and accomplishing the unaccomplished. I will always picture you dancing the night away at your family fiestas, which were always a blast by the way. I wish we could have had one more trip to Palm Springs or Las Vegas, it was the most fun! I love you my friend. Please visit me in my dreams, as I will be thinking of you always.

Sophia, in your short life you lived and loved more than most people do in a lifetime. You loved your friends and family unconditionally and taught us all the importance of living in the moment. I will try to follow your example for the rest of my life. Will miss you always til we meet again. Love you mija!

Dear Sophia, I remember my first time to the US when you and Christina literally forced me to do movie education. After that I became an American Studies student and, still, all this movie education I got at university does not come close to the insights you gave me. Although we did not meet that often it became pretty obvious how you shaped all your siblings lives and characters. You had such a big heart for everybody! I still remember how you were taking such loving care of your grandmother when I first met you. Now you can take care of each other and I am sure some day we'll also meet again. Until then you will live on within every single one of the Favela Family and like this they will always keep you alive...

Sophia... You touched so many lives & so very loved by many. I will forever cherish all the memories we've shared over the years. Thank you for your loving friendship all these years. I don't know how we'll ever get by without you, the glue that held everything & everyone together. My heart aches over your loss, but in it you will forever hold a place. I love you friend...

Prima, I will miss every laugh, joke, dance move, music/sport/everything trivia, our Spanish conversations (Google translate was your good friend too). But all the memories will remain well kept in my heart until we meet again and joke about them all over again. It makes me sad not being able to be there to hug your sisters, brothers and parents but I will do that with my thoughts and prayers from the distance.
Love you and will miss you always.

Sophia made a tremendous impact on so many people. She was so smart, funny, opinionated, loving and charismatic. What is beautifully evident in these messages of condolences and in the stories about her is that she was the same sassy, loveable, caring person toward each of us. Her love for us was deep... and it was genuine. And she never missed an opportunity to express it. If you were on her mind, as many of us often were, you knew it. These qualities drew us in and made her very important and special to us as well. As we try to come to terms with her death, I hope that we will also learn something from the way she lived...with a heart full of love that she never hesitated to share. We loved, admired and respected Sophia and will miss her, but will think of her always. Without a doubt, each of us are better for having known her and having her in our lives. Our deepest condolences and heartfelt prayers go out to all who are grieving this tremendous loss.

Soph, I cherish all the memories, and the witty back and forth banter you would carry on with others. I'll always remember your signature smirk and, of course, the "Sophia giggle." But most of all I'll remember your undeniable presence as you entered a room, our mutual love of baseball, tennis and the month of October. Love you Soph!

Sophia, you are truly missed and will always be missed. I'll always remember the fun times we've had, the movies and music we've discussed, and your sparkling personality. You welcomed me into this family with love and I'll always remember you with love. Keep an eye on all of us, OK?? Love you!!!

It's still so odd to not have you around. At every turn I think, "Ooh Soph would love this!"

She was THAT person. The one to let you know you weren't being rational. She'd keep you grounded while delivering the medicine with some snarky remark. Her brutal honesty never hurt, it only enlightened.

Wise beyond her years, despite the fact that we often teased her for her age. Her observational skills were superb and on point. Her love of people allowed her to see the things that may not have been spoken or shown, but important to address nonetheless.

I lost a best friend the way many people did. That's the kind of person Sophia was; a best friend to all.

Sophia, I cannot believe you are gone. You were one of the most positive and intelligent people I know. When I came to live with your family you welcomed me with open arms and treated me like a real part of the Favela family. I will always remember you laughing, loving and quoting movies. You will always be loved, always. I am so thankful I got to know and laugh with you.

I remember meeting a little girl with wild curly hair who had so much energy. I remember your giggle and little girl smile. Seeing you grow up to be an amazing young woman was a real honor. I was so proud of the caring, loving, giving person that you became. You always helped those you loved and you did it with so much joy in your heart. I will always remember your smile and your laugh. When you arrived at the family parties or gatherings you brought such joy and love and fun with you. Our future family get togethers will not be the same without you. We will all miss you in our lives. It isn't fair that you had to leave us so soon. I know if you had a choice you would have stayed. I will miss seeing you and getting that smile and hug so full of love that I always got from you. You made me laugh with your stories and with your jokes. I will treasure the moments we shared and I will always remember your special smile. Most of all I will remember the love that you showed me Always
I will miss you very much and I know you will watch over us as our guardian angel.
God Bless You Sophia

You had an incredible way of connecting with people. Whenever you would be excited to tell me something, I felt so special and included. It will be weird thinking that you will never walk into the room when I go to your house. But, I take comfort in knowing you are chillin with the Lord and feeling the love we have for you. I'll go on that cruise one day, and I'll keep you with me when I do. I love you, Soph.

Sophia, I feel bad that I haven't posted anything about you it's probably because it doesn't feel real that you're actually gone,I honestly can't comprehend what happened. I wish we were closer but we were close to the point when every conversation or story we shared was never dull always full of laughter. I will truly miss you and you're love of life and laughter. Sophia, where to begin.... Your life is to be celebrated just as I know your legacy will be. You've inspired so many people around you and it's evident to see the influences you've left on people's lives, minds, and hearts. You are wise beyond your years and you weren't selfish with your knowledge. The world lost someone great in your passing and the heavens gained someone phenomenal! I can still "hear" your laugh about that "joke" I made just recently. Your kind heart and loving personality will be missed. I am truly sorry Favela Family for your loss. My prayers are with each and every one of you. She's in good company. Sophia, tap on the airplane windows from time to time. Rest easy friend.

I have known Spohia since high school , from playing softball together and then working together at the movie theatre she always was laughing and cracking jokes . I remember many night we would all hang out together and just listen to music and have a great time . I remember going to Knotts Scarry Farm with the group of us and she was brave enough to go in the haunted mazes and ride all the rides ! I know she is looking down on all of her family and friends , we will always have her as our guardian angel . I am so sorry for your loss , Spohia will live on in each person who knew her ! RIP Soph.

I remember meeting a little girl with wild curly hair. You were so full of energy and so full of love. I remember hugging you and telling you how pretty your dress was. I remember your giggle and your little girl's smile. Since then I saw you grow up and become this amazing young woman. I was very proud of you for taking care of your grandmother. You gave so much of yourself to your family and friends. You always were very loving and caring with all of us. I remember every time I saw you we would hug and I could see your joy and love for me and for everyone. Every family party and gathering you would arrive with that smile and that laugh and you would just bring that joy to all of us gathered there. Our gatherings and parties will not be the same without you. You will be so very missed by me, by all of us. I know you will look down on us and be our guardian angel but we so wish you were still here with us. It's not fair that you had to leave us so very soon. I know if you could have had a choice you would have stayed with all of us. I will miss you very, very much and I will never forget that smile and that hug but most especially all your love.
God Bless You Sophia

Wanting to say how sorry we are for your loss. I'm the aunt of Deanna Valdez. My name is Jill.Sophia was one of our extended family members. She will be truly missed at our next family functions. What I loved most about Sophia was her sence of humor and not being afraid to speak the truth. I know she'll be one of Gods angels now. We will continue to pray for her.
