Sophie Vukovich Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 24, 2007.

Sophie "Cokey" Vukovich entered eternal life on Tuesday, May 22, 2007, in her home surrounded by her family.

Sophie was born in Butte on April 14, 1926, to Eli and Annie Murja, both immigrants of the former Yugoslavia. Sophie was nicknamed "Cokey" by her father. He called her chicken, which in Serbian is "kokos" and the name was shortened to Cokey.

Cokey grew up in Butte in a humble and happy family. She was blessed with many friends and a wonderful sense of humor. She loved her Orthodox Church and time spent with her brothers and sisters. She met and married her husband, Al Vukovich, who preceded her in death in 1965.

Cokey was an active member of Holy Trinity Orthodox Church as well as an active participant of the Mother's Club, the Circle of Serbian Sisters and the choir.

Cokey outlived all of her brothers and sisters of the Murja family as well as the Vukovich family. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Doris Vukmirovich, Sara Ogden, Mylle Vukovich and Mary Frey and by her brothers, Dan, Joseph and Fr. Milan.

She is survived by her sons, Alex, John and Joe Vukovich; grandchildren, Joey, Jaelyn, Anna and Marisa and husband, John Camp; and great-grandchildren Bailey, Milo, Macy, Ethan and Emily. Also surviving is special niece, Vonnie Bolton, sister-in-law, Dorothy Ferguson, and the daughter she always wanted, Jan Nugent, who has cared for her for more than 25 years. Numerous nieces and nephews from the Murja, Frey, Vukovich and Ogden families.

Cokey battled multiple sclerosis for close to 40 years without a complaint, maintaining her wonderful sense of humor. She was well-cared for by Jan, Linda Carroll and Lori Panasuk - her three "Guardian Angels." She looked forward to all those who visited her, especially her close friend, Sylvia Skuletich.

She was a brave and courageous woman who taught us all the meaning of love and how to be grateful for our health. She is part of a generation that we will never see again. God grant her memory to be eternal.

Relatives and friends may call from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday in Holy Trinity Serbian Orthodox Church for visitations. Prayer services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 11 a.m. in Holy Trinity Serbian Orthodox Church. Interment will follow in Mountain View Cemetery.

I resently had the honor to have paid my respects to Cokey at Holy Trinity Orthodox Church and I was amazed how wonderful the services were. The Church is one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen!!The preist's sermon's were breath taking and Fr Al's talk made me think about life and makes me cry to this DAY! We should all take a lesson on how to bury our loved one's,I can tell you one thing Cokey was looking down on the funeral from Heaven and was PROUD to have a loving Family that took very good care of her right to the end!God Bless The Vukovich Family And May God Grant You Many Years....
