Our wonderful son was tragically taken from us early in the morning of Wednesday, August 28, 2013. He will always be remembered for his infectious smile and his joy of life. Spencer lived most of his life in Calgary, attending Elbow Park Elementary School and Rideau Park Junior High. He moved with his parents to Paris, France in 2010 where he attended the International School of Paris and graduated from high school with Honours. The ISP was where Spencer developed his love and talent for art and explored the integration of engineering principles into his wire frame sculptures, all with the encouragement and help of Mr. James Chedburn, who became Spencer's mentor. When he was not soldering and bending wire at home, he explored the wonders of Paris and Europe with his circle of friends and classmates who hailed from twenty-seven different countries. Paris was also where, along with his mother, Spencer built on his joy of cooking, making sure to download every episode of Iron Chef to watch his hero Mario Batelli. He planned on continuing to develop his cooking skills and was accepted into the Ferrandi International Cooking School. Although he was half way around the world, Spencer also maintained the friendships he had built in Elementary and Junior High Schools and bragged to his friends in Paris about the friends for life he had in Canada. Spencer was also a very talented athlete not afraid to try his best at Soccer (Football), basketball, volleyball or floor hockey although downhill skiing was his passion. He began skiing with his family at the age of two and Fernie, BC became the family's second home during the winter months. Spencer loved to explore Fernie's hidden powder trails and learn the freestyle skiing skills from his talented coaches at the Fernie Ski School, who all helped to add to his rich experiences in life. Spencer will be missed by all who knew him, and especially by the family he leaves behind: his mother and father, Deborah Shennette and Barry Hanson; brother and ski buddy Matthew; adoring sisters Kirsten and Victoria of Calgary; grandparents Frances Hanson and Orest Fostey of Saskatoon, and Gary and Margaret Shennette of Mississauga; aunts and uncles Mark and Patrice Shennette and cousin Kelly of Barrie, Erik and Kristy Shennette and cousins Christopher, Bradley and Mitchell of Mississauga, Randy and Yvonne Hanson and cousins Nicholas, Alexander (Anapaula), and Chantal of Saskatoon, Arlene and Rob Wells and cousins Aubrey of Winnipeg and Christa (Brad) of Barrie, Craig and Karen Hanson and cousins Julia and Jasmine of Harris, SK; and Leanne and Kit Cheung and cousins Nathan and Mikayla of Calgary; and his quiet supporter Theo.

Those wishing to pay their respects may do so prior to the Service at the Church commencing at 12:30 p.m. Funeral Services will be held at Scarboro United Church (134 Scarboro Avenue S.W.) today, August 31, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Spencer's memory may be made directly to the Fernie & District Search and Rescue Society, PO Box 190, Fernie, British Columbia, Canada V0B 1M0. In living memory of Spencer Hanson, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park.
