GUMBERG STANLEY R.
81, chairman of J.J. Gumberg Co., one of the city's and nation's most prominent real estate development companies, died of lung cancer at home Monday evening, February 16, 2009. Mr. Gumberg is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Marcia Morgan Gumberg; devoted father of Ira (Anita) of Pittsburgh, Lawrence (Ina) of Pittsburgh and Andrew (Christy) of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida; and the loving grandfather of 8 grandchildren: Jill (Kevin), Amanda, Brian, Zachary, Ali, Jordan, Carly and Tessa. He also is survived by his sister-in-law Barbara Morgan Spiegelman (Stanley). A Pittsburgh native and graduate of Duquesne University, Mr. Gumberg served for many years on the boards of Carnegie Mellon, Westminster, Seton Hill and Duquesne Universities. A tireless advocate and philanthropist who supported institutions of higher learning, the arts and health care in Pittsburgh, Mr. Gumberg received an honorary doctorate degree of business from Duquesne; the University also named its library for him. As Montefiore Hospital's Chairman of the Board, he spearheaded the sale of the hospital to the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, resulting in the creation of the Jewish Healthcare Foundation. He also held board leadership positions in Pittsburgh financial institutions, including the former Union National, Integra National and Grant Street National banks. Services at Rodef Shalom Temple, 4905 Fifth Avenue (at Morewood) on Thursday at 11 AM. Visitation at Temple two hours prior to services (9 to 11 AM). Entombment West View Cemetery of Rodef Shalom Congregation. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions may be made to a charity of the donor's choice. My sypathy to the entire Gumberg family. I enjoyed my visits with Mr. Gumberg in the Duquesne Club Health and Fitness Center. He was one of the kindest men I knew. He was extremely supportive of our program and his friendship will not be forgotten. He spoke of his family often and his love for family was very apparent. I will treasure fond memories and extend my sympathy to Mrs. Gumberg and the entire family.

Dear Marcia: Although we had known Stanley for only a few years through our association with the Pittsburgh Symphony and our side-by-side seats, we had dramatic respect for him. A quiet man.....one eager to learn more about us than speak about his own substantial accomplishments. He walked tall and strong with moral clarity. We are richer for having known him. Anyone would have been.

God bless him and may his memory be eternal.

I was very sorry to hear of your father's passing. My first job out of high school was with the J.J.Gumberg Co. on Craig Street in Oakland. I will never forget working for your family
and for your kind and cheerful father.
May he rest in peace.

To The Gumberg Family:
A member of my extended family has passed. Stanley was always available, interested and supportive throughout my path in commercial real estate. My partner Gary Wilson and I purchased Bill Green Company in 1990, which was comprised of agents from the former brokerage arm of JJ Gumberg including Bill Green, Bill Green, Jr. and Norman Rose until 1968. Stanley always made time for Gary and myself. We appreciated and respected his counsel and our many conversations throughout the years. My thoughts and prayers are with Marcia and the family. He will be missed. Most Sincerely,

Barbara Haser

To the Gumberg family,
I am sorry to learn of SRG's passing, and extend my sincere sympathy to all. I remember fondly the 70th birthday celebration we had for him in the lobby of the Brinton Road offices and can still see his beaming smile when we wheeled in a "flaming" cake.
You are in my thoughts and prayers.
May God comfort you.

Sincerely,
Barbara (Walker) Haser

February 18, 2009

I was saddened by the announcement of the death of Stanley Gumberg. Back in 1959 I was hired by him at the offices of J.J. Gumberg Co in the area of industrial real estate brokerage. Stanley taught me to sell and lease properties in the W. Pa. area leading to the purchase of the brokerage business and the formation of Bill Green & Co. Stanley was a brilliant man and I owe gratitude to him for coaching me in the business. I have not seen him for many years since I retired to South Carolina and knew nothing about his illness. My sincere sympathy to Marcia and the family. Bill Green Jr.
