Stanley Paul Herzog, 67, of Winchester, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 3, 2021
Stanley was born in Houston, Tx. to Rose Marie (Matthijetz) and Alvin Herzog on February 8, 1954. He attended school in Houston until his senior year where he graduated from La Grange High School. He married Joyce Lehmann on November 22, 1975.
Stan and Joyce were a huge part of making events happen in the Winchester Community, owning Mickie’s Café and purchasing the old general store while turning it into The Country Basket which is currently Murphy’s Steakhouse. He worked as a retail manager for Perry Brothers, Winn’s, and retired from Walmart after 20 years of management in sporting goods.
Stanley was a very simple man and dedicated worker. Always at work before time and sitting in the break room drinking his coffee. He was instrumental in the establishing the Winchester Fire Department. Attending certification training and was given the title of “Shovelhead”, also gaining the title of “Elmer” at the deer lease and “Stan The Man” to his friends.
Stan enjoyed many hobbies. In his early years he played baseball, football, snow skiing, deer hunting, fishing and always found time for playing dominoes and poker. Stan was an incredibly smooth dancer sought out by many local lady friends. Later in life he took up bowling, watching tv, taking a road trip to the casino’s, a weekend getaway at the coast with the family and caring for his precious chihuahuas.
Stan is survived by his wife of 45 years, Joyce Herzog; son, Shane and wife, Trish; daughter, Dana Srubar; three grand girls: Paytin, Payge and Lilly; mother, Rose Marie Kilian; sister, Lorie Lehmann and husband, Doug; brother, Larry Herzog and wife, Glenda; mother-in-law, Mary Lehmann; sister-in-law, Mary Burns and husband, Howard and Connie Taylor and husband, Keith; brother-in-law, Kenny Lehmann and wife Stacey; aunt, Edna Kessel and Laura Matthijetz; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; grand dog, Chloe and his recliner buds, Roxie and Lulu.
He is preceded in death by his father, Alvin Herzog; sister, Tina Herzog; stepfather, Arnold Kilian; father-in-law, Arnold Lehmann and numerous aunts and uncles.
Visitation will be 12:00 – 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 7. 2021 at Bastrop Providence Funeral Home, 2079 Hwy 71 East, Bastrop, Texas.
A Celebration of Life will be held following visitation at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 7, 2021 at Bastrop Providence Funeral Home.
Family will receive friends at the Winchester Community Hall at 5:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to the Winchester Methodist Church Building Restoration Fund, 8933 FM 153, Winchester, Texas 78945, The American Kidney Fund, 111921 Rockville Pike, Suite 300, Rockville, MD 20852 or a charity of one’s choice.
The family of Stan wishes to extend our sincere thanks to St. David’s North Hospital ICU staff and the St. David’s Kidney Transplant team for their care and support.
