Stanley Martin II Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 9, 2024.
Stanley Carroll Martin II, affectionately known as "Slug," passed away unexpectedly at the age of 64 in his South Portland, Maine, residence on February 26, 2024. Born on April 13, 1959, in Norway, Maine, to parents Stanley C. Martin and Mary Albison Martin, Slug was a Buckfield High School graduate of the class of 1977.

Following high school, Slug embarked on his career as an electrician, eventually traveling across the United States to lend his skill set to several large-scale commercial construction projects. During his working career, he also discovered an unexpected passion for competitive dancing-a hobby that provided numerous connections weaving throughout his travels in life.

Slug's enduring desire for stimulating and engaging activities was also demonstrated by his enthusiasm for baseball & alpine skiing. He was a loyal fan of the Boston Red Sox, Boston Celtics, and New England Patriots. However, he also adopted an affinity for the Green Bay Packers and University of Wisconsin Badgers during his time in Wisconsin. Above all, he cherished his grandchildren, Lucas and Hannah, and his son.

Slug leaves behind his son Bryan and grandchildren Lucas and Hannah; his mother Mary; his sister Sherry Bennett and her husband Charlie; his sister Judith Allen; his brother Duane and his wife Teri; and numerous nieces and nephews whom he cared for deeply. His passing was preceded by the death of his father in 2002.

To commemorate Slug's life, an observance will take place later in the spring. Details will be provided to those close to the family and shared on his Facebook page.

In lieu of traditional remembrances, the family suggests that donations be made in Slug's memory. Contributions to support the educational endeavors of his grandchildren can be sent to PO Box 338, Cumberland Center, ME 04021, c/o Bryan Martin. Alternatively, donations to the Jimmy Fund and/or Dana Farber Cancer Institute are welcomed.

Slug's memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him, and through the stories shared by friends and family.

Slugger was a good friend from way back. He could follow a block and stiff arm too score, tackle with abandon, turn a double play, fly a bobsled off No-Par to the far snow bank of Orchard Street and march in the Comet's. May You Rest in Peace with the Angels. Dave Bonney

We were walking back from a track meet. We ran on a horse track then. We were walking and talking and were almost to Charlie's Pizza and Slug wasn't paying attention and was walking in thr middle of the street. An old lady was driving a car and stopped right on his foot. She was scared and screaming. Slug was screaming telling her to pull off his foot. Anyway it seemed like forever but she finally drove off his foot and we helped him get to the high school. He wore a cast for awhile and missed the rest of track season.

My first memory of `Slugger" is when he was brought home after being born. I grew up in the apartment above the Martins.

I think I will always remember being taken skiing by him and his ex wife to Lost Valley and Sunday River in a BLUE FORD PINTO.
A true classic.
