Stanley Price Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Apr. 6 to Apr. 7, 2010.
PRICE, Stanley Allan June 14, 1928 - April 3, 2010 Stanley Price was born June 14, 1928 In Taber, Alberta and passed away in his sleep in Calgary, April 3, 2010. In the 1930s, Stan moved with his parents to Crossfield, Alberta where he, his older brother Lynn (Toronto), younger sister Pauline (Crossfield) and younger brother Wayne (Crossfield) grew up. A couple of years after they both graduated from High School, Stan married Florence Landymore on October 16, 1948. In 1951, they moved to Acme and started their family farm. The first addition to the family was in 1950 and they went on to have, as Stan used to say, 1 dozen kids (1 girl and a dozen boys). Dave and Isabelle; Matthew (Cathy) - Jason and Tyler, Greg, Teri, Joanna, Chad; Art and Debra; Kristin, Lindsay, Robert; Al and Ginny; Scott, Torey, Josie, Allie; Doug and Helga; Joel (Amanda) - Madison, Kim (Dan Buchanan), Robin (Jerome Pommier), Kendra, Tonay (Evan Hegedys); Ray and Peggy; Carla (Trevor Mazutinec); Janell (Misha Wilkin) Nicole, Michelle, Leanne; Joyce and Bruce (Lord) Garth, Paul, Roscoe, Kenneth; Glen and Annelies; Julia, Travis, Emma. To Stan (and Flo) family always came first, and then their friends and community. For Stan, community began with Acme where, in his early years, he was an active leader of youth groups and a United Church board member. In the pursuit of greater opportunities for family and friends, he helped with the development of the public swimming pool, golf course and the construction of the United Church in 1956. To facilitate new businesses coming to town he supported the development of the commercial building on Main Street. Stan also felt very strongly about the value of good education and served as a local trustee for many years.Stan's "community" also extended to fellow farmers and livestock producers, regionally, provincially, nationally and internationally. He was the founding Chairman or President for a number of associations whose members were part of the modernization and specialization of some sectors of Canadian agriculture. He travelled internationally to learn from and pass on his knowledge and experience to farmers in other parts of the world.Stan was tenacious in the pursuit of new opportunities for his family and his communities. Some would call him stubborn, however together with some very good friends and colleagues he was able to help found strong provincial and national organizations such as the Canadian Swine Council (Canadian Pork Council). He teamed up to pioneer animal health programs with local veterinarian Dr. Jack Greenway, performance testing and recording systems for cattle and pigs and world leading carcass grading systems with Dr. Howard Fredeen. Closer to home with the progression to more modern pig and pork production, Stan worked with Ken Woolley of England, (an energetic entrepreneur in his own right), Dr. Jack Greenway, Dr. Howard Fredeen to create a pig genetics company called Pig Improvement (Canada) Ltd. Over its 40 years of existence it has evolved into the Sunterra group of Companies. Of course throughout this time Florence also was heavily involved, adding the human touch to this business and its people. Over the years, Stan, Florence and the family have earned a number of awards. Two that stood out for Stan were the induction into the Alberta Agriculture Hall of Fame, and the national award as the Canadian Association Family Enterprise of the Year. His family and friends will remember Stanley as a strong man, committed to building opportunities for his family and his communities. He was someone who took satisfaction from their accomplishments. He highly valued honesty and integrity in his own work and in others around him. He will be missed by many. Stan's Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. in the Acme Community Hall, Wednesday April 7th. Donations can be made in Stan's name to the Acme United Church, or to the charity of your choice. Arrangements in care of Sunset Funeral Service Ltd. Linden, Alberta 403-546-3903.

To all the Price's, young and old,
When a loved one is lost and the present suddenly becomes empty, remember that memories are forever. Nothing can take away the meaning they have brought to your life or the love you have shared. These memories are yours to cherish.
May you find peace in the love of family...and strength in the caring words of friends.
Sincerely, Ron & Bev

What a special man, he will be missed by so many -

April 11, 2010

I am so sorry to hear about Stan's passing. My brother Floyd (who lives in Mexico) just e-mailed me to let me know. He hears about local news more than I do b/c of the internet. Your family has lost a wonderful father, mentor, and friend. What a fine legacy he has left for the next generation! Flo, I am so sorry that I didn't know sooner about Stan. May you be comforted by all those special family members and friends around you.
Sincerely and with Affection and Respect,
Bonnie Dean (Wayne)
