Stanley Rabin Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 14, 2024.
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Stanley Rabin on December 10, 2024, surrounded by his loving family.

Stanley Rabin was born on October 24, 1927, in The Bronx, NY, to Abrasha (z"l) and Bella (z"l) Rabin. Both of his parents were born in Ukraine, and his sister, Sara (z"l), was born in Romania.

He took great pride in being a first-generation American. Stanley was drafted into the U.S. Army at the end of World War II and spent 18 months stationed in Japan. He was honorably discharged at the rank of Sergeant and remained proud of his military service throughout his life.

Upon returning to New York City, Stanley attended City College, where he earned a degree in Civil Engineering. It was at a square dancing event at Columbia University that he met the love of his life, Tamar Richman. They married on December 25, 1955, and settled in Queens, NY.

Stanley led a rich and fulfilling life. He worked for the NYC Housing Authority for 15 years, becoming an expert in high-rise construction. Later, he served as a consultant to the Borough President of Queens and as Chief Engineer of the Topographical Bureau. He was also deeply involved in local Queens politics. Beyond his professional and civic contributions, Stanley was an accomplished bridge player, a lover of classical music, and, most importantly, a devoted father to his three daughters.

After retiring, Stanley and Tamar moved to the Washington, D.C., area. There, Stanley volunteered at the Clinton White House, where he handled unofficial mail, fielded phone calls from the public, and welcomed visitors during the holidays. He also served as a docent at the Kreeger Museum, contributed his time to the Shakespeare Theatre Company and other local theater groups, volunteered at the Jewish Community Center's art gallery, actively participated in the Kennedy Center community, attended concerts, assisted immigrants with citizenship applications, and continued to enjoy bridge.

Ten years ago, Stanley and Tamar relocated to San Diego, eventually residing at La Vida Del Mar, a senior community. Stanley leaves behind his wife of 69 years, Tamar; his daughters Debbie (Scott), Nina (Chip), and Karen (Jeff); six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A private burial will take place on Sunday, December 15, 2024, at El Camino Memorial Park, attended by immediate family. In honor of Stanley's memory, donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C.

Tamar,

I was deeply saddened to hear about Stan's passing. He was a kind and joyous person who brought so much warmth to our zoom class. His laughter, humor, knowledge, and genuine enthusiasm for learning were a gift to all of us.

It was always such a joy to see the two of you together, your shared presence created a sense of community and love that touched everyone in the room. The way the two of you engaged with others and encouraged fellow classmates was truly inspiring, and Stan will be deeply missed by all of us who had the honor of knowing him.

Please know that my thoughts are with you and your family during this incredibly difficult time. If there´s anything I can do to support you, please don´t hesitate to reach out.

With deepest sympathy,
Prof. Stevan Dupus

Stan Rabin was such a nice gentle man. He did not need to be "noticed," he simply would offer to "help" if that was needed, or else he would simply give a gentle remark, and a large smile. I shall miss him. He remains in my memory.

What a great and long life Stanley Rabin had, and most importantly -- how wonderfully dedicated my dear friend Debbie has been to her Dad. I know how difficult this is Deb. My heart is with you.
