Stephen Earl Bair of Collingswood NJ passed away peacefully on March 10, 2023. The son of the late Clarence and Virginia Bair, Steve was born on March 16, 1949 in Culver Indiana.
A 1967 graduate of Culver High School, Steve went on to earn his Bachelor of Science in Biology from Western Michigan University and his Master of Education in Athletic Training from the University of Arizona. Steve began his legendary athletic training career as an Assistant Athletic Trainer at Temple University in Philadelphia. In 1978 he was named Head Athletic Trainer at Temple, a position he would hold for 10 years. In 1988 Steve took his talents to Overbrook Senior High School where he would remain until his retirement in 2010.
Bair’s commitment to the athletic training profession was obsessively passionate. He was a director for the Board of Certification For The Athletic Trainer, District Two Director for the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA), and a passionate and vocal Board Member for the NATA Research and Education Foundation. On the regional level he was on the Executive Board of the Eastern Athletic Trainers’ Association (EATA). Steve was also significantly involved in New Jersey as the treasurer of the Athletic Trainers’ Society of New Jersey (ATSNJ), treasurer of the New Jersey Political Action Committee, and a founding member of the ATSNJ Golf Outing that raises funds for various charities in New Jersey.
Where Bair truly shined was as a mentor, teacher, and friend. As a mentor and teacher, he was an outstanding clinician that could teach at the level the student needed. Brutally honest but always making sure the student would come away better for the experience. Steve taught his students to be involved and to promote themselves within the profession. To his high school colleagues, he was always willing to listen and lend advice. As a friend Steve was faithful to a fault, a more loyal person you would be hard to find. Just as importantly Steve liked to have fun, if you couldn’t have fun doing it, then it wasn’t worth doing.
Bair’s student athletes were his pride and joy. He cared for high-level college athletes as well as freshman high school athletes; they all received the same outstanding care. Many speak of him fondly as always appreciating his down to earth approach and great sense of humor.
Steve was recognized for his outstanding service to the athletes and the profession. He was a member of the NATA Hall of Fame, ATSNJ Hall of Fame, and the EATA 49 Club 2017. He had won the ATSNJ Distinguished Service Award, the EATA Excellence in Secondary School Athletic Training Award, the EATA Leadership Award, and presented the William E. “Pinky” Newell Address at the 2010 EATA convention.
He is survived by his brother, Warren Bair and his niece, Jennifer. A celebration of life will be held in the near future.

The "Bair" will never be forgotten by the Bright Famliy. Took care of me during my 4 years at Temple. Became a great friend of my entire Famliy for years afterwards. My kids grew up with the Bair. Played golf at least once a year in the Grudge match. Pops and myself vs. Bair and my brother. What a great time had by all. Lacrosse Final Fours for 15 plus years. Trips to see my girls play softball in college. He always had a smile on his face and new exactly the right thing to say. Rest In Peace my friend you will never be forgotten.

Steve was my high school ATC and the reason he got into the profession of Athletic Training. He mentored me throughout my undergrad career and as a new profession. He really molded me into the caring/compassionate ATC I am today. He was a leader, advocate, and teacher to me; one of the biggest impactful people in my life.

As a young Temple orthopaedic surgery resident I worked with Steve a lot taking care of the Temple athletes. One weekend he invited me to come to Boston to help with the Temple football team playing Boston College along with Ray Moyer MD. Through his many friends in the world of athletic training he got us front row seats behind home plate for a Red Sox game, then beers in the Sox locker room after the game. Such a humble, hard working, great guy.

My sincere condolences and sad to learn that Steve passed away. I have known Steve for many years and appreciated his many attributes as a high school athletic trainer. Steve was one person that I know would fight those many battles for his student athletes. Steve was well respected by his many fellow professional athletic trainers and friends. RIP my friend.

"BAIR" and Teddy Quadenfield were our TEMPLE Athletic Trianers who provided us with world-class care! Having been a "regular" in the training room... I have a great appreciation and memory of... "The Bair!" In fact... it was Steve who told my then female athlete wife... that I was a "good guy," when she asked about this football player who had been asking about her. 45 years ago... I owed this guy a big thanks! Today I'm equally thankful! RIP-B!

A mentor who taught me as well as accepted me fir who I was even if I didn’t fit the typical mold. Have been grateful ever since during my career and instilled in my students many of the things I learned from Steve. Let’s all continue to tell our stories about him so his spirit lives on for generations to come.
Rest well my friend

All of the gymnasts at Temple loved Steve and we were glad that at least if we had to be in pain we could have a few laughs in the training room while we took our ice baths !!!! Steve knew something was wrong with me when I went into the training room to sleep before gymnastics practice at Temple. He made sure I got checked out and it turned out to be a terrible case of Mono . When I had knee surgery He took me home and got my meds for me because my family didn’t live near-bye . He made sure to check up on me the next day to make sure I was alive . He was just a Great person , always made me laugh and he made sure I knew he was proud of my accomplishments .. rest in peace Steve! My condolences to his family ! .
