A lovely, kind man. It was my pleasure to work as receptionist at WFA and have the privilege of knowing him. I wish I could have worked longer for WFA and continued to get to know him even better!

My deepest condolences to the Friedlaender family. Goodbye Steve. I remember very vividly the times Steve and I served together on committees at the Boston Architectural College. I well recall more philosophical discussions about education, and the lives of educators, from time to time. Steve's perspective was often bigger than that of those around him. His words were at once gentle in tone, empathetic in character and incisive in content. Good humor was often part of the mix. He was / is impossible to forget and he will be sorely missed, I am sure, by all of those who knew him.

It has been my privilege to have shared special moments with this incredible human being. He was a wise, kind, curious, and loving soul. We shared a love of learning and stories; this is my point of departure and arrival. My last memories are of the Steve in the hospital. But, it is the meaning of the word "hospitality" that resonates with me. It is what always made me feel safe and loved in his presence. This is the feeling that will always abide with me. In literature this also the myth of "Julien l'Hospitalier"; I consider him Julius the Hospitable.

Nancy: We have been so out of touch (alas) that I was shocked to read Steve's obit. He was a dear long-time friend. I will miss him and certainly would like to attend any memorial or celebration.

I have loved Steve since I was 4 years old, and he was living in Finland with his late wife Nan. Steve was an incredible human being, kind, compassionate and honorable. I feel blessed to have known Steve and will miss him deeply. May his memory be a blessing.

Stephen was a lifelong friend, next door roommate at Exeter, the son of charming and delightful and creative parents, all traits Stephen carried forward with eloquence and fine humor. His memory was prodigious, and his affection for people close to him, boundless. A sad and fond farewell, Stephen.

There are not many people who have shown such appreciation for music and the arts as Steve did. The world will be at a loss for him no longer being able to enjoy it. Nor have I met such a gentleman and friend. It will always be an honor to have called him a friend. He will be much missed.
