STEPHEN FRIEDLAENDER Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Aug. 25 to Aug. 26, 2022.
FRIEDLAENDER, Stephen Architect and patron of classical music Stephen Friedlaender, noted architect and supporter of classical music education, died August 19 of leukemia complicated by Covid-19. He was a founder and principal of HMFH Architects in Cambridge. He initiated and promoted their focus on school architecture, which lead to hundreds of projects in New England and beyond. Their first significant award was for the Brewster Elementary School, built under Steve's leadership in 1976 (the Walter Taylor Award). He was an active member of the Boston Architectural College for more than 25 years, serving on its Board of Directors, as an Overseer, and chairing committees on Development, Continuing Education and Long Range Planning. He was elected Fellow of the American Institute of Architecture. As George Metzger, partner at HMFH reminisced, "Steve's generous and selfless spirit of engagement fostered deep connections and friendships not only among partners and newly minted interns at the firm, but also among client, construction, and engineering partners." Music education and particularly The New England Conservatory of Music became his focus later in life. He was Life Trustee and Chair of the Board of Trustees (2008-2012). He served as a mentor for students and supported many through the Friedlaender Family Presidential Scholarship. He also played a pivotal role in the construction of NEC's Student Life and Performance Center. NEC's President Andrea Kalyn notes, "Steve was an extraordinary, kind, and warmly generous person, and a much-loved member of our NEC family. All at NEC are so grateful for his many years of leadership, support, and care, grounded in his deep love of music and his commitment to our students. We will miss Steve tremendously." He was born in New Orleans in 1935, raised in Greensboro NC, graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy ('53), Harvard College ('57), Harvard Graduate School of Design ('61), and lived in Newton and finally Cambridge. He is survived by Nancy O'Connell; brother Jonathan; sons, Lucas and Nathaniel; and 7 grandchildren. Visiting Hours: A Memorial Service is planned for mid-October at the New England Conservatory of Music.

A lovely, kind man. It was my pleasure to work as receptionist at WFA and have the privilege of knowing him. I wish I could have worked longer for WFA and continued to get to know him even better!

My deepest condolences to the Friedlaender family. Goodbye Steve. I remember very vividly the times Steve and I served together on committees at the Boston Architectural College. I well recall more philosophical discussions about education, and the lives of educators, from time to time. Steve's perspective was often bigger than that of those around him. His words were at once gentle in tone, empathetic in character and incisive in content. Good humor was often part of the mix. He was / is impossible to forget and he will be sorely missed, I am sure, by all of those who knew him.

It has been my privilege to have shared special moments with this incredible human being. He was a wise, kind, curious, and loving soul. We shared a love of learning and stories; this is my point of departure and arrival. My last memories are of the Steve in the hospital. But, it is the meaning of the word "hospitality" that resonates with me. It is what always made me feel safe and loved in his presence. This is the feeling that will always abide with me. In literature this also the myth of "Julien l'Hospitalier"; I consider him Julius the Hospitable.

Nancy: We have been so out of touch (alas) that I was shocked to read Steve's obit. He was a dear long-time friend. I will miss him and certainly would like to attend any memorial or celebration.

I have loved Steve since I was 4 years old, and he was living in Finland with his late wife Nan. Steve was an incredible human being, kind, compassionate and honorable. I feel blessed to have known Steve and will miss him deeply. May his memory be a blessing.

Stephen was a lifelong friend, next door roommate at Exeter, the son of charming and delightful and creative parents, all traits Stephen carried forward with eloquence and fine humor. His memory was prodigious, and his affection for people close to him, boundless. A sad and fond farewell, Stephen.

There are not many people who have shown such appreciation for music and the arts as Steve did. The world will be at a loss for him no longer being able to enjoy it. Nor have I met such a gentleman and friend. It will always be an honor to have called him a friend. He will be much missed.
