Stephen Furbush Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 12, 2024.
Phoenix, AZ - On May 6, Stephen (Steve) George Furbush passed away after an unexpected illness. He was 62. Steve grew up in North Carolina, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania and California. A lifelong learner, Steve achieved a Bachelor in Economics, and Management Sciences and a Master's Degree from the Pacific International Affairs Program at John Muir College, all at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). Steve worked his way through college by working in the seafood industry where he found his life's work. After graduation, this landed him a job in Phoenix at Shamrock Foods Company heading up their seafood department.

Early in his 26-year career with Shamrock Foods, he had lunch with Karen from IT. Several lunches together turned into a 24-year love story. They loved celebrating their anniversary in Maui every February where they took in as many whale-watching adventures as they could. On their most recent visit, they took two excursions and saw epic displays of beautiful humpback whales.

Steve had many interests outside the office. In the early Phoenix years, he followed his passion for martial arts training, building a strong community around the Senshinkan dojo he managed. Steve began training at the Jiyushinkan in Tempe, Arizona in early 1994. His teachers include Charles E. Clark, Aaron R. Clark, Stan Conner, Marc Fox, and he also practiced Shinto Muso Ryu Jo (gomokuroku) and Tenshin Shoden Katori Shinto-ryu with Phil and Nobuko Relnick. He is Jiyushinkai 4th dan and was an instructor at the Senshinkan in Tempe. He frequently flew to Washington State to continue learning the classical Japanese koryu martial traditions he loved.

He was also an avid hiker, who loved spending time in the nature preserves near his home. Once retired, Steve started most days with a monster hike. He would drive the short distance to the trailhead so he could spend more time in the preserves.

After Steve retired in 2018, his big plans to travel the country were put on hold due to COVID-19. Instead Steve decided to take up the ukulele and began lessons with a local musician. He loved his new hobby, and would practice most afternoons. He wrote his first song and began a second.

From a very early age, Steve could often be found with a book in his hand. He kept a list of the books he read during retirement, most of which he recommended and loaned to friends and acquaintances. Anyone who met Steve soon found themselves discussing "What are you reading?" or "What's the last movie you saw?" This was true even in the hospital during his final days. The last book Steve had in his hands, Mitla Pass by Leon Uris, will go unfinished.

Staying with his sharing nature, Steve gave a few people a second chance at life through organ donation. A 71-year-old Phoenix man received Steve's liver and right kidney, and a 71-year-old Tucson woman received his left kidney; someone will be receiving his corneas.

Steve was a man of independence, self-reliance, and determination of self. He quickly developed an encyclopedic understanding of any subject that interested him and took great joy in sharing his knowledge and experience with anyone who wanted to learn more. Steve had a big presence, but loved intense one-on-one conversations. He was an enthusiastic Uncle to many beloved young people, and had a unique way of making them feel understood and special.

He will be missed and celebrated by his wife Karen Furbush, his brothers Rob Furbush, Greg Furbush, and Jeff Furbush and their spouses, his mother Mary Mosshammer, his niece and nephew, as well as his cousins, their spouses, and families, Karen's mother Mary Steinbrock and her brothers, Kevin Steinbrock, Keith Steinbrock, Bruce Steinbrock and Roger Steinbrock and their spouses, her nephews and niece. He was predeceased by his father, Robert Furbush, his step-father Alden Mosshammer, and Karen's father Richard Steinbrock.

A celebration of life will be held on June 8th in Phoenix, AZ. If you wish, memorial gifts could be made to either of these organizations. Steve volunteered with World Central Kitchen after the Maui fires. He believed in Chef José Andrés' mission to be first on the frontlines, providing fresh meals in response to humanitarian, climate, and community crises. The Pacific Whale Foundation is dedicated to ocean and marine life conservation. From participating in the 10k Run for the Whales, to booking all whale-watching activities with them, PWF was the only choice for Steve.

The family extends their appreciation for the loving care and support provided by everyone at Aveon Health, HonorHealth Scottsdale Thompson Peak Hospital, HonorHealth Scottsdale Shea Hospital, and all of the emergency medical personnel who assisted in the ambulance and helicopter transfers.

We will always carry Steve's memory in our hearts and remember his words to always be prepared for anything. Every Day Carry (EDC)

I'm so sorry to hear of Steve's passing. I was googling names the other day and saw this obituary. I lived next door to the Furbush family in Raleigh, NC IN THE 1960s. I was the boys babysitter. I traveled with Liz and the boys to New Hampshire for a month visit in the summer. I have wondered where everybody lives and is doing now. I still live in NC but close to the beach now. Please give my love to the whole family and again I'm so sorry for this sad news. Susan Navickas Hewett.

I have wonderful memories of Steve´s sense of humor from high school. He was always a wonderful addition to Melody Martin´s class. So sorry for your loss.

Karen was my yoga student and still single before her marriage to Steve. Steve and I had commonality in marshal arts, weapons, history, and finally yoga practice to balance the rigors of his marshal arts practice. We three shared many yoga practices, hiking, beach, and fine dining experiences throughout the course of our twenty plus years of friendship. I have so many loving memories of all our times together between Arizona and Maui and feel a major loss.

You could not ask for better neighbors than Steve and Karen. Steve was always friendly and welcoming. He usually had a funny Comment. Steve was interesting, Always learning a new musical instrument, starting a new project, about to go on a cool trip somewhere. He left the world a better place. Blessings.

I will always remember Stephen´s warm, generous nature. He always took pains to make sure everyone around him felt comfortable and welcomed. I´ll miss the many times we engaged in hard training together on the dojo floor.

Keeping his memory in mind, I say a prayer for his repose.

We will miss you Steve you made a difference in peoples lives including mind. I remember we first met in 1992 as we worked together on a fresh seafood program with Cheasepeake Seafoods for Shamrock , you ended up joining and leading Shamrock's seafood department. Steve was very intelligent, creative and gifted thinker. It was a blessing to have him part of the family. Steve also met the love of his life Karen at Shamrock. Steve held various key roles throughout his 26 years of service including manager and director of sales support. Steve was recognized early as a innovative leader and was invited to participate on the corporate strategy sessions. Steve loved hiking, martial arts and his Shamrock Family our loss is heaven's gain!

I hope you are checking out Bali and beyond now Steve. Go check out that 3rd world country, without having to seat in the airplane for so long. You´ll be sorely missed my friend. Very much. It´s been over a week and I still cannot believe that you are gone. Thank you for believing in me, even when I dead doubts when I joined your team. You took me under your wing and made sure I was recognized for my work. Steve was the first person who took me to a shooting range by shamrock. Why? Because he has it in his car, and wanted to make sure that I know how to handle it when and if situation arose. When Steve, John Colligan and I went to lunch (rotate between Tao´s sandwhich and Da Vang), he always drove us in his exterra, so he wanted to make sure his passengers are familiar with what he has in his car. That´s how responsible of a person he was. I would missed many of his repeated stories hahahahahaha but he was a GREAT story teller! My last memory of him was him walking Alex, Andreas, Ella and I to the car leaving their annual Easter party. Not very often he walked us all the way to the car, in fact that was probably the 2nd time (at most) he walked our family out and along with us to the car! Karen and Steve truly made us feel like their extended family. Thank you for all the great memories and I regret always calling you an old man :(

I worked with an affiliate of Shamrock for many years. Steve was one of many Shamrock contacts we worked with. He always seemed to be able to diffuse any challenge with humor and was a mentor of mine in my early days in distribution. Although I have not spoked to Steve since before his retirement, I can genuinely say he had an impact on my career and he will be missed. Sending love and positive energy to Steve's wife, family and close friends.

Steve was just one of those people you never forget. Always a great story, a great line, or something to make you laugh. Highly intelligent and always lots to share. Fun loving, all around great man. I can recall a dozen or more stories just sitting here thinking about him. May you rest in peace my friend. God Speed.

The very first time I met Steve was at Karen's annual pumpkin carving party in 2012. He opened the door and said "Welcome Home". They welcomed me into the family and I never looked back.

Met Steve at Shamrock in 2014 and found him to be one of the most authentic people I´ve met. Steve lived life out loud and without regret. He was the kind of guy to give you the shirt off his back or ammo if you needed it ;) I saw him shortly after he retired and remember how excited he was exploring the world and the new things in his life. He will be sorely missed! Rest in peace brother!

One of the first conversations I had with Steve was regarding the beautiful orchid tree in the front yard of the house he shared with Karen. He told me that when the seed pods fell from tree and popped open.. an "army" of doves infiltrated the yard enjoying the seeds and leaving a mess in their wake. It had to be one of the funniest stories I had ever heard about seed pods and doves. Steve knew how to tell a story!! I believe those doves were his nemesis.

My first time ever to any Hawaiian Island in December of 2018 thanks to Steve & Karen´s loving hearts, this was after my motorcycle accident of January 2018 so it was a VERY SPECIAL GIFT and honor to whale watch with them and my childhood friend Jacob! Will ALWAYS remember Steve´s fun loving personality. Love you all, Connor Cassidy

A really special moment we spent together was when we were standing over my father's hospital bed and he asked me to take a walk with him. We went out to the parking lot where he said he had a gift for me. It was a ukulele of his I've seen him play a couple times before. He was telling me all about it as we were walking to put it in my car. Along the way we came across a disheveled looking older man in a hospital gown and socks slumped over against a car struggling to breathe. He then proceeded to stop and take the time to talk to the man asking if he was okay and what was wrong. Turned out the man just got done with an appointment for lung cancer and was having trouble finding his car due to the difficulty he had breathing. As i went off to find where his car was, steve sat there and talked with him till i got back. One arm over each of us we helped him walk to his car. It just goes to show that even during the toughest of times emotionally, he was always there for others when they needed someone. I'm gonna miss him a lot.

We went on vacation with Steve to Maui where we celebrated Steve´s 60 birthday and my 18th birthday. Steve gifted me a ukulele because he wanted us to be able to sing and play together one day. A special ukulele that I will treasure forever.
