Stephen Gura Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 7, 2024.
STEPHEN L GURA Born July 22, 1931 Died July 31, 2024 (93 years old)

Stephen L Gura, a devout Catholic, returned to God on Wednesday, July 31, 2024.

Steve was a devoted husband to Carolyn (ne Schulte), they were married just shy of 69 years. Together they raised 9 children, Ed (OFM), Steve, Jerry (Gigi), Jeff (Lynn) Dan (Dare), Mary, Charlotte Beth & Vicky. He loved his grandchildren, Dan (Amanda), Kristy, Jason, Jimi, Scott, Haley, Chloe, Ava, Rachel, Caroline, Tadi, Michael and Lana. He was a proud great grandpa to Nolan and Adam.

Dad was born in Osceola Mills, PA to John and Susan (ne Knapp). He is preceded in death by his siblings, John (Madeline), Mary (Mike) and Paul. He is survived by Paul's wife, Betty.

At the encouragement of his Mother, Dad moved to Detroit to live with his Uncle George and Aunt Rose in the hopes of finding a job. He found this job at Ford Motor Company going through the 4-year apprenticeship to become a tool and die maker. In 1955, Dad entered the Army and served for 2 years, FMC held his job during this time. He then served with the Army Reserves for another 5 years and was honorably discharged in January, 1962. Dad retired from Fords after almost 40 years of service in 1991!

Dad loved to play golf and was fairly good! He enjoyed a good game with co-workers, cousins and his son, Steve. He was an avid reader, especially Reader's Digest. He loved to learn, especially about his health and how to stay healthy. He enjoyed many sports, as a spectator, Lions, Red Wings, Tigers. We were happy he was able to experience a great Lion's season this year! Dad was a meticulous homeowner, making repairs, improvements, fertilizing and weed-whacking the lawn up until the age of 90. He was a tinkerer too, especially working on cars. Dad was gifted with a knowledge of cars and generously gave of his time helping us repair and maintain our cars. Dad enjoyed playing cards, in earlier days with his brothers-in-law, poker and pinochle and in more recent years, euchre. Somewhere his game of choice switched to dice games, literally 'dice' and Yahtzee.

Most of all, Dad loved praying the rosary which brought him closer to Jesus through the Blessed Mother. Dad was homebound the past 19 months and bedridden the last 7 months so he would watch daily Mass and receive Holy Communion with family. While most challenging for Dad, these past 7 months humbled him to depend on others in ways completely unfamiliar to him. He was so grateful, patient and loving. We experienced a humorous side, which was new to us and most enjoyable. Dad will be missed and yet we know he was ready to go to his final Home.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, August 23, 2024, at 12:00 noon, cremains in-state at 11:00am; Rosary at 11:15am at SS Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church; 41233 Ryan Road, Sterling Heights, MI

A special Thank You to all who lovingly helped Dad transition to eternal life.
