Obituary:

Stephen William "Steve" Haas, born on July 20, 1945, in Chillicothe, Ohio, peacefully passed away on April 26, 2024, in the care of St. Petersburg Nursing and Rehab in St. Petersburg, FL at the age of 78.

When Steve was seven, he and his mother Hope moved to Anna Maria Island, Florida where he enjoyed fishing and all things Gulf of Mexico. A few years later, the family moved to St. Petersburg which became his permanent home.

Steve served in the U.S. Air Force for 4 years at the Japanese Misawa Air Base working with code breaking. Following his military service, he dedicated over 30 years to the U.S. Postal Service, holding various roles including in the Registry Room.

He graduated from Boca Ciega High School Class of 1963 and attended St. Petersburg Junior College. Steve remained curious and enjoyed learning throughout his life.

Steve found joy in nature and gardening: spending countless hours tending to his garden and appreciating the beauty of the outdoors.

Steve is survived by his sister, Carla McKelvey Clausen, and brother-in-law, Gary Clausen. He was predeceased by his mother, Hope McKelvey and Grandmother, Grace Frakes.

No service is planned at this time.

Still the best of friends with Steve's sister, Carla, I've known of his post office career and challenges later in life, but I always think of him as the "exotic" older brother who had been to war and now toiled through night shifts so he could dote on his sister, who was in high school. In particular, I remember him spending hours to be sure of buying the best possible tennis racket for Carla for her birthday because the two of us were playing now and then. Rest in peace, Steve!
