Stephen Hughes Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 7, 2015.
Stephen Hughes January 30, 1953 - October 29, 2015 It is with much sorrow that we announce the passing of Stephen Hughes on October 29, 2015. Diagnosed with ALS in May 2014, Steve fought a courageous battle for as long as he could. He passed away peacefully and quietly in the comfort of his own home with his family by his side.

He will be profoundly missed by his wife Arlene, children Jessica (son-in-law Cameron), Sarah, Sam, Christine and Jenny, and by his mother Beryl. His cousins, uncles and aunts, family friends, fellow hockey players and business partners will miss him every day. His friendliness and selflessness left him with many special connections, each personally touched by his friendship in Victoria, Calgary, Montreal, Ontario and Costa Rica.

Many who knew him appreciated his smart aleck demeanour, love for hockey (especially the Habs), appetite for oysters and scotch, and sound business advice. He was a man of integrity and a bon vivant, who believed in living life passionately, with joie de vivre. He was happiest spending time with his kids and getting updates about their adventures in academic studies, careers and personal endeavours. He was a phenomenal father, an amazing role model and incredibly devoted family man whose loss will be felt by everyone.

Steve is pre-deceased by his first wife Susanne Rousseau, younger sister Kim Hughes, father Robert Hughes and Uncle Brian Taylor. A funeral mass will be held at St. Patrick's Parish in Victoria on November 14 at 10:30 a.m. We kindly ask that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the ALS Society.

I was so shocked to hear about Steve's passing
As neighbours in Costa Rica for nearly 14 years-
I loved His dry wit and humour -
My heart goes out to Arlene and family

I always had so much admiration and respect for Steve - when Blair Houston informed me of his demise last week I was devastated-
He was my go to guy for being a gringo in Guanacaste - seriously

We had some fabulous trips at Casa Blanca

Steve - RIP we will always remember you from the bottom of our crazy Canuck hearts

We met Stephen briefly at Cam and Jesse's lovely wedding. How sad that the girls have had to say good bye so soon. He will live on in their memories and when the rawness subsides they will have these happy times to treasure. Patrice and Gregory Berko, Calgary
