Stephen Monahan Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 2, 2023.
Stephen Martin Monahan, 79, of Fleming Island, FL, passed away on July 16, 2023. Born on March 13, 1944, in Detroit, Michigan, Stephen was a beloved husband, father, brother, and grandfather. He was known for his artistic talents and diverse interests.

A true Renaissance man, Stephen was an artist, musician, philosopher, photographer, and poet. His sense of humor was infectious, often making those around him burst into laughter at the most inappropriate times. He had a deep appreciation for Haagen-Dazs ice cream, cactus plants, and the works of Einstein, Carl Jung, and George Carlin. Above all, he cherished his family and friends.

Stephen is survived by his loving wife, Nancy Monahan; his daughter, Elizabeth Monahan; his sister, Julie Wolcott; his brother, Clark Monahan; and his grandson, Benjamin Clark. He was preceded in death by his father, Martin Monahan, and his mother, Mabel Valine Monahan Shilling.

Stephen's educational journey led him to Life Chiropractic College, where he graduated in 1978. He then opened Monahan Chiropractic Clinic in Jacksonville, FL, where he practiced for over 35 years, leaving a lasting impact on his patients.
Prior to his chiropractic career, Stephen had a remarkable journey in the music industry. At the age of 16, he was signed to the Rayco label with the Tremelos and released his first record, "Cackle/The Weird One." In 1961, he had a solo release on VeeJay Records with "Leaves of Fall/Handsome Guy." He collaborated with his friend and colleague, Tom Lazaros, on several songs, including "City of Windows," "Play While She Dances," "Iron Horse," "Newberry Barn Dance," and "Long Live The King." Stephen also had the opportunity to work with renowned artists such as Del Shannon and Snuff Garrett. His contributions to the music industry were recognized by the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers, receiving awards for his songs "That's What Leaving's About" in 1962 and "Somewhere Between Love and Tomorrow" in 1974.

A proud veteran, Stephen served in the United States Navy from 1965-1967. His dedication to his country was admirable and reflected in his military associations.

A Celebration of Life was held on September 30, 2023, at a family residence to honor and remember Stephen's remarkable life. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Hospice Foundation in his memory.

Stephen Martin Monahan will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His artistic talents, infectious humor, and love for his family and friends will forever be remembered and cherished. May he rest in eternal peace.

When I was little we had Uncle Steve´s 45´s in our stack of records in our little house in Plymouth MI, and since I was very into music, this was beyond cool to little me. He was a rock star; the cool uncle who had recorded albums!

As I grew older, I came to understand my uncle as an eccentric, free spirit, who liked to "fish for blues" on Mimi´s dock and photograph everything. He´d carry a camera around taking pictures constantly. Then came the camcorder, and the pictures turned to movies. I once had a conversation with him on the phone when I was a teen, that even today, have no idea what he was talking about. He spoke in riddles, or was it poetry, always up to the listeners interpretation. Poetry I think!

But my favorite memory was when Steve drove up grandma Mimi´s driveway in the 80s blaring music from his car one day. It was Frankie Goes to Hollywood, and not just from the radio. I ran up exclaiming "I love these guys", and he shows me he has the tape. Yes! My `rock and roll´ uncle shares my musical tastes in some small way. (We called it "new music" back then, early 80s). This was unusual to me; adults like my mother (Steve´s sister) and dad listened to mainly classical music, and talk radio. This exchange solidified his cool uncle image that afternoon. I got a BIG STEVE GRIN that day, so that´s the day I hang onto and remember the most. I didn´t know my uncle well but I do know he was musician, an artist, and deep and free thinker. What the earth has lost, the Eternal has now gained. Rest in peace Steve and more importantly fly high!
