Stephen Paul Moyer

Chesapeake - After all these years of checking the obituaries to see if your name was there, you finally made the list. We only wish you could have been here to read it.

Stephen Paul Moyer ("Steve", "DJ") of Chesapeake Virginia, passed away June 12, 2016, at Sentara Norfolk Heart Hospital. Steve was 67 years old.

Born on February 16, 1949, Steve was the only child of James F. and Marianna W. Moyer of Norfolk Virginia. His early years were spent growing up in the Berkley section of Norfolk where he played baseball, learned to tap dance and attended Epworth United Methodist Church. After graduating high school, Steve learned to be a radio broadcaster. He worked in several radio stations in North Carolina as well as the local station, Honey Radio (WHNE), which later became WNIS. His love and knowledge of country music served him well during his time at the station where he played many of his favorite artists including George Jones, Merle Haggard, and many others. In addition to working in radio Steve also made a living as a truck driver where his CB handle became "DJ". Steve was an active member in the local Teamsters Union and drove a car hauler for Allied Systems from which he later retired. In retirement Steve could not sit around, so he went to work for Pop-A-Lock which kept him quite active. He enjoyed helping people both on the job and in his personal life.

Steve was an avid sports fan, from baseball to golf to NASCAR and everything in between. He could always be seen cheering on his beloved UVA Cavaliers despite having a daughter that graduated from Virginia Tech. He followed the RAMS NFL team; watched and attended as many Yankees games as he could, and camped out with his friends to catch his favorite NASCAR driver, Jeff Gordon, fly around the track. There was a bet to be made on all of them, but he made you feel good even when you lost.

He was also a member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles, Berkley Aerie #795 and the Aragona Moose Lodge. He had many friends at both and loved spending his spare time with them.

Steve was predeceased by his parents and two of his favorite Papillion dogs, Luna and Sinbad. He is survived by his daughter, Stephanie Cooke; his daughter Amy Cook and her husband TJ; his son, Michael Moyer; and his daughter Jenn Wilson and her husband Lyn. He had 13 grandchildren; 1 great grandson; several cousins; a great number of very special friends and four very sad dogs who already miss being petted at 1:00 AM by their favorite human.

A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at the Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel on Monday, June 20th at 2PM. A visitation will precede the service at 1PM. A private interment will be held with the family at Woodlawn Cemetery, Norfolk, VA at a later date.

Memorial donations may be sent to the Fraternal Order of the Eagles #795 P.O. Box 5114 Chesapeake VA 23324-0114. All amounts collected will be donated to the American Lung Association in Steve's name.

On his headstone he had these words engraved so everyone would remember, "He was a nice guy".

His Dad bought him a bicycle, an expensive one, but Steve couldn't ride yet. So we went to Robert Gatewood school yard to learn how. After about twenty minutes he was riding with no problems. So I told him to go around the school building since their was plenty of room and no traffic. After a while we realized he should have returned, so we went looking and his bike was in the middle of the street in front a car and the driver was really shaking. He said that he saw Steve ( that's what his family called him) and he seemed a little wobbly so the driver stopped and waited for Steve to peddle passed, but instead Steve continued to peddle on, off the side walk at low rate of speed on down street and right into the front of the stopped car. Bike was ruined. I got the blame, but he now knew how to ride.p
