Stephen Moyer Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 2, 2022.
At his home in Alameda, Stephen Moyer passed away in his sleep on August 29, 2022.He is survived by his sons Kempton (Trang/ Alameda), Jarrett (Jennifer/ Alameda), Ramsey (San Diego), and Weston (Sarah/ Menlo Park) and grandchildren Adalese and Miles Moyer and Campbell, Morris and Mack Moyer.Steve was born on April 2, 1958 in Oakland, California.Preceded in death by his father Terence and infant son Tyler James, he is survived by his mother Barbara of Oakland, his brothers David (Carol/ Oakland) and John (Valerie/ Piedmont), and his sister Kassie Luckhardt (Jim/ Santa Rosa).A native of Oakland and resident of Alameda, Steve attended Oakland High School, together with his one and only wife, from whom he would ultimately divorce but with whom he had all of his children. He there excelled in the school's drama program and was the statistician for the football team, meanwhile commanding a respectable income singing acapella in a quartet as a street performer. It was for the Oakland High Wildcats that Steve would finally fulfill his dream, against his mother's prohibition, of playing contact football, when he famously donned his younger brother's uniform and surreptitiously participated in a junior varsity football game at the age of twenty-two following weeks of preparation. After graduating from Oakland High, Steve worked for a year in a hospital then enrolled at Claremont-McKenna College in Southern California before transferring to University of Pacific to reconnect with his high school sweetheart.Steve chose to put aside his long-time intention of becoming a Hollywood stunt man when his wife became pregnant with their first son, Kempton. Instead, he joined the family real estate business, Moyer Realty Company. It was a career choice well suited to his talents, for Steve was a highly sociable and persuasive man, who once convinced a kidnapper holding him in his car at gunpoint to let him go, and who in any number of endeavors had a knack for rallying participants to the cause, whether it was putting together a dominant little league baseball team (the Hit Squad) in Oakland's summer league; starting the first known dynasty fantasy football league in 1988 before nearly anyone knew what fantasy football was, a league still active to this day (the Oakland Perennial Football League); or assembling no lesser figures than Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, and Ronnie Lott for a large-scale lithograph signing and dinner social (a project entitled Cornerstones of a Dynasty). Steve consequently shined in this profession, coming to specialize most notably in educational, institutional, and religious facility real estate sales. Simultaneously Steve served for many years as an active member of the Rotary Club of Oakland.Steve's major passions were NFL football and fantasy football, the Golden State Warriors, La Selva Beach, and especially his sons and their lives, but the objects of his zeal were multitudinous, from standup comedy to roller coasters to the latest infomercial product to jazz to book-reading. On any subject Steve put his mind to he could be a competent judge and able writer, getting countless of his letters to the editor into the sports sections of the major bay area newspapers, for instance.A loyal friend and devoted father, son, and grandfather, a lover of tradition with a zest for the offerings of this world and an enthusiasm eminently contagious, a big laugher and quintessentially fun-loving man, Steve's passing will be keenly felt by those who knew him. He leaves behind a legacy of numerous multi-decade friendships and a considerable and growing progeny. In accord with Steve's wishes, a small service of family and close friends will be held in La Selva Beach in October. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to the Eat, Learn, Play Foundation or to the Alameda Boys and Girls Club.

I was Steve´s last hairdresser at Connie´s on Piedmont Ave. The last time I saw him was July 3,2022. He surprised his first hairdresser, Jessie on her birthday. Knew him since he was 16, and haircut will only us at Connie´s. Wonderful person. Loved his family. Will miss his big personality. Sorry for your loss.

Oh my goodness! Steve had such a sweet soul! He was my older sister´s and future husband´s OHS classmate. I will always remember how kind he was to often stop to say hi to me and ask how did I like Oakland High, even though I was a sophomore, and he was a senior. We will miss you, Steve.
Our heartfelt condolences.

Steve was a lead in the Oakland High cast of "Arsenic and Old Lace." We shared great memories of our time together working on and performing that incredible production, and at OHS in general. Prayers to all in the family. Steve will be missed.
