Stephen Sanchez Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 12, 2014.
Stephen (Steve) Wilfred Sanchez was born to Wilfred and Betty (Grijalva) Sanchez on 4 October 1968 and was called to be with the Lord on 7 August 2014. Steve grew up in the cozy town of Pecos, NM, where he enjoyed the beautiful mountainous area and graduated from Pecos High School in 1986. He then graduated from New Mexico State University in 1991 with a bachelor degree in Transportation and Logistics. It was at NMSU where he met his wife Shauna and became the proud father to Roshel. Steve then moved to Lancaster, California and embarked on a musical escapade, traveling worldwide as a security manager for the likes of: Tori Amos, Morrissey, Gloria Estefan, Alanis Morissette and Live. In 2003, he became a father again to a beautiful set of twins: Shyann and Roxion and began a new career in real estate. Steve enriched his family's life by becoming deeply involved in Desert Vineyard Church and lived out his faith by building homes for the less fortunate in Mexico. His heaven on earth was Parker, Arizona; it was here that Steve savored being on the river and cherished time with his friends and family. Steve had two passions in life: expressing his love for music (via playing the drums) and indulging in water sports on the Colorado River. He will forever be remembered and missed for his charismatic "larger than life" personality, big heart and infectious laughter that brought joy to every atmosphere.

Steve is preceded in death by his father Wilfred, grandparents Willie and Josephine Grijalva and Gillie and Emma Sanchez. He is survived by his wife Shauna, daughters Roshel, Shyann and Roxion, mother Betty, sister Joey (Michael Fabsits) and their two children Wil and Raelen, as well as his two river brothers Albert Sanchez and Michael Smith. He was blessed to have many special aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family and friends.

The honorary pall bearers are: Albert Sanchez, Michael Smith, Michael Fabsits, Kenny Baca, Anthony Baca, Mark Sanchez, Eddie Sanchez, Jimmy Baca, Michael Flores, Pat Hernandez and Rick Plata.

The world lost a big heart and big personality when we lost Uncle Steve. There will never be anyone to fill his shoes and he will be sorely missed. He taught us to wakeboard along with Uncle Mike and Uncle Al, though Steve gave us the "you have three strikes" rule when we were trying to get up. That boat always came floating by with the ski rope and there he was shaking his head no from the driver's seat..."that's one!" There's that tough love of his. We're missing him so much. I remember how he really wanted to meet this guy I was going to marry when I got engaged, and it meant a lot when he said "I like you, Lucas." The Steve stamp of approval meant a lot. He was so supportive of us, and our lives, and the things we wanted to do. We're going to miss his laugh, his jokes, his stories about his touring days, fireworks from the boat, watching the sunset from the dock, grilling (we're so crushed Lucas never got to build him his BBQ), and so many other things we won't get to do with him. We had an amazing last river trip with him the 4th of July, 2014 and I'm so glad to know he was so happy and full of joy when we saw him. I'm sad we didn't get more time with him and there are so many plans we made that we hadn't gotten to yet. To the girls and Roshel, the love of his life, Joey & kids, and Betty... our deepest condolences. We love you all and are here for you. We'll always be your family. Thank you for sharing this amazing man with us. We love Steve so much; we're so thankful and blessed for the time and relationship we did have with him. Above all, I'm thankful that I know that man knew Jesus and there's comfort in knowing that we will see him again someday.

Passing can be considered a journey one takes alone with a crowd. Steve knows he has the spirit of family and friends with him. To Shauna, the lovely girls and Family our prayers continue for you. Each of us is here for the other while Steve rests in peace (R.I.P.)

My thoughts are with Steve's family and friends. I only knew him as a Tori fan but he was always nice to me. So sad to hear of his passing.

this is very sad news. he was always very kind, and seemed to respect the ministry of Tori Amos really taking time to hear from her fans. One time, in the rain in Ann Arbor, MI, Steve arranged for all of us to meet Tori on the actual tour bus. My prayers go out to his family in this time of loss and transition.

Tori's old bodyguard. But, I knew him personally. It's a small world, it really is! A long time ago when Tori was doing that Tour in 1999 w/Alanis I took a lot of photos. During the holidays I went out to my Dad's house in Lancaster. In the dessert, in the middle of nowhere. Lancaster is a weird place. Anyhow, I brought my photo book and was showing the photos to my younger sister. She yelled and pointed "Steve' what is Steve doing in your pictures?" I was like no way. She said that they were neighbors & she was friends w/Steve's daughter. And Steve's wife use to come over my Dad's for Tupperware parties, etc... And so, every time after that I would speak to Steve on the many Tori tours. I remember him being cranky sometimes. Lol. But he did a good job protecting our Tori!! This is sad, he's still young & has a daughter & wife. I always wondered what happened to him. RIP Steve! -Raven

I am so sad for the loss of your son, brother, dad, cousin and my dear friend Steve. He was a man of faith who made no secret that he relied on it to help him through each and every day. If he was your friend that meant something to him. With Steve friendship was based on loyality, dependability, respect and truthfulness from both sides. His favorite word was " river". He was a giving father who loved his kids and saw it as a joy and privilege to spend time with his daughters. Although Steve was not perfect, he was an example of a good father, a good friend and a true professional. His smile and his laugh will live on forever in our memories and our hearts. It doesn't seem fair to me, but i know he is spreading that smile and laugh in the next life. I find comfort knowing that someday he will be there to welcome me with both. Steve, you were one of the good guys and will forever be one of my best friends

Words cannot even begin to express how sad we are at the passing of our sweet, handsome, funny, lovable cousin, Steve. It was like walking into a big, warm hug to be in his presence. We will never forget our precious cousin. May you soar with the angels, Steve! We are so sorry, Auntie Betty, Joey, and the rest of Steve's immediate family. Our thoughts and prayers are, and will continue to be, with all of you at this sad time. Much love always, Floyd and Cindy Carabajal and family
