Stephen G. Weiss

Stephen G. Weiss, M.D., died unexpectedly on January 30, 2011, at his condo in Orange City, Florida, at the age of seventy-two. Halligan McCabe DeVries Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements Stephen was born in Reinbeck, Iowa, April 16, 1938. He graduated from the University of Iowa Medical School in 1964, and enlisted in the Navy. He became a Naval Flight Surgeon serving in the Philippines. Later, he completed a Urology residency at LSU, Charity Hospital, New Orleans and was board certified. He practiced in Muscatine, Iowa; Davenport, Iowa; and Moline, Illinois, until April 2010, when he retired to Florida. This last year, he enjoyed going to the theme parks and deep sea fishing with his children. As a young boy, Stephen achieved Eagle Scout and worked in the Reinbeck asparagus fields. He was an accomplished fisherman, but also had a vineyard, tree and asparagus farm in west Davenport. The Christmas trees he grew are still there because he could not bear to cut them down. As a physician, his home phone number was always listed and he made house calls if asked. Stephen is survived by his wife Catherine, his daughters Katy Wilkens (Brian) of Keller, Texas; Clarissa Weiss (Mark) of Salt Lake City, Utah; his sons Dr. Stephen G. Weiss, II, (Susan) of Debary, Florida and Philip Dean Weiss of Davenport, Iowa. His grandchildren include Tessa Weiss who has adopted his dog, Oscar; Harold and Louise Colloton who spent their summers entertaining him; Erica and Casey Pauli; Ashley, and Lizzie and Taylor Wilkens. His sisters Ruthann Schmidt (Louis ) of Osage, Iowa and Jean Weiss of Loveland, Colorado survive him, but he is preceded in death by his brother Robert Weiss, a granddaughter, Tricia Pauli, and his parents. In lieu of flowers please give to St. John's Lutheran Church, Reinbeck, Iowa or your local Humane Society. Services and burial will be in Reinbeck, Iowa, at a later date.
