Steve Cobb Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 4, 2014.
Steve Cobb, age 55, passed suddenly at home on September 2, 2014 in Pensacola, FL. He is survived by his wife, Sandra; mother, Lynn Couch; brothers, Mike (Krishna) and Mark (Lydia); and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Steve was born in Denver, CO the youngest of three boys. He grew up in Nashville, TN until the death of his father at which time he moved to Jemison, AL and completed junior high school and high school at Jemison High. He was a very successful athlete, lettering several years in football (quarterback), basketball (guard/forward), and baseball (catcher, batting 3rd or 4th).

After completing college at The University of Montevallo, he worked for several years in various businesses that involved travelling. He thus began listening to books on tape and was subsequently transformed into a voracious reader. No subject or genre escaped his inquiry and he truly became broadly educated across many disciplines, thoughtfully considering the meaning and purpose of life from diverse perspectives across the ages.

In pursuit of more personally meaningful work he returned to school and earned another bachelor's degree, master's degree, doctorate degree, and MBA at various institutions. He was thereby able to spend the majority of his career in athletics - coaching in Texas and Iowa, in administration as Athletic Director at Georgia Southwestern and the University of Alaska at Anchorage, and in the classroom. He met Sandra Carroll while they were both graduate students in Texas. They were married in Paradise, MT, 22 years ago.

Steve was a colorful character with charisma, confidence, and an unflinching commitment to excellence. His extensive knowledge and clever wit ensured no dull moment in his company. He cared most passionately for the students, athletes, coaches, and staff with whom he felt privileged to serve. His deep sense of responsibility extended beyond his family to his community, country, and world. It was not manifested by mere words, but by meaningful choices in the hard work of living. He loved and was loved.

The Celebration of Steve's Life will be at Ridout's Southern Heritage Funeral Home in Pelham, AL on Saturday, September 6, 2014 at 2 p.m. with visitation and reception to follow at Ridout's Southern Heritage.

My heart hurts everyday. I miss and love you brother! Steve embodied the true meaning of "live life to the fullest" and he did so while helping others achieve their best. "That's all!"

Sandra, just know you are in my heart and Prayers. You can count on me to remain a good friend and if I can ever do anything to help you, you know I will.

I am hurting my friend. I miss you terribly. I will continue to keep moving on with a smile on my face while trying all I can to help those young men and women we both care for try to find their way in the world... But I am hurting. Something just does not feel right in the world. Alaska is my home and the place I love the most but Alaska did not deserve you my friend. You were much bigger and better and losing you has left a great void. Please rest in peace and I look forward to seeing you again.

Sandra,
We were deeply saddened to hear about Steve. He will always be remembered at GSW for the many accomplishments he made. Steve was able to move GSW athletics forward on many fronts. His time here will be always remembered by many of us. Steve was a friend that made his mark wherever he landed. He will be missed by many. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

It's not difficult recalling indelible memories etched by Steve in my mind and heart to say in remembrance of this good friend and AD colleague. Steve was a clear thinking, passionate communicator, never at a loss for words, frequently willing to upset the apple cart with his perspectives, but always willing at the end of the day to find a common laugh, at someone's expense, even his own. He was immensely competive, but was the first to call with congratulations when someone else's team succeeded. If SPU had won something, Steve would be generous in his praise, then tell me, next year UAA's gonna get ya. I repeatedly needed to call Steve and congratulate the Seawolves who proved themselves frequent champions.

Steve's passing is painful. I looked forward to many more phone calls and occasional meals as Steve traveled through Seattle. For now I echo Jon Carey's recollection of Steve's frequent concluding colorful remark at GNAC Management Council meetings to emphasize his point, "End of dissussion, pass the beer nuts."

Sandra, our prayers uplift you and your extended family.

Steve was a friend in high school. He was a good role model for he loved his sports and he excelled in it. I hate we didnt get to say goodbye, but Steve and I spoke recently because he was concerned about the health of my husband and hoped the best for Gary. I was touched by his concern. Gone too soon my friend! Hope we'll meet again!

To Sandra and the Cobb Family. I grew up with Steve and was a friend of his in high school. Even though I was younger he still made me feel like I belonged. We would play basketball every Sunday at Mr Alton's and of course Steve did not like to loose. I didn't either so I would try to be on his team. I also ran into a college room mate of his (Jerald Stallworth)whom I work with and was able to get them in conact with each other after years of not knowing where Steve was and what he was doing. Even though I had not talked to him since Mr. Alton died, I did try to keep up with him and what he was doing. He was a great friend and he will be missed. My prayers are for all of the family.

Steve was certainly a colorful character! Also at his core was a deep, undying commitment to students and the higher education process. He will be greatly missed, yet his memory will live on through all of his wonderful accomplishments. He had such a rare combination of intelligence, common sense, and wit. My heart goes out to Sandra and Steve's family. Steve made an impact during his time on earth and will be missed by more people than you can imagine.

Farewell to a respected colleague and wonderful friend. Your head was always high and your path straight forward. Your legacy will live long on the UAA campus and in the lives of countless student-athletes past, present and future. Well done my friend! I will end this thought as Steve would have..."Pass the beer nuts!" I will enjoy mine even more now.
