Steve Cupic Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Sep. 28 to Oct. 1, 2017.
June 19, 1936 - Sept. 23, 2017 Pete Cupic, 81, of Marysville, WA passed away at home, surrounded by his loved ones, on Saturday, September 23, 2017, after battling colon cancer. Pete was the proud son of Croatian immigrants, Steve and Kata Cupic. He had a wonderful childhood growing up on Grand Avenue in Everett, WA. "Garlic Avenue," as the neighborhood came to be known among locals, was a close-knit community of Croatians from the Dalmatian Coast who treasured food, song, dance and laughter. Pete attended Immaculate Conception School and graduated from Everett High School in 1954. He also attended Everett Community College. During his school years, Pete excelled in sports, especially basketball. His skill on the court was remembered many years after he left school. The name "Pete Cupic" often rang a bell with new people that he met, who still had memories of Pete playing in high school and junior college leagues. Pete also served in the Marine Corps for two years and during that time played basketball for the Corps league. Pete started in commercial fishing as a young man, first going to the Bering Sea every summer. He eventually became a longshoreman with ILWU Local 32 and worked as gear tender until his retirement. Pete was an avid outdoorsman, and he made yearly trips to Eastern Washington to hunt and fish. Pete and his wife, Gloria, were together for almost 30 years, married for the last 10. They enjoyed their life together. One of their favorite activities was traveling. They especially liked to drive to Eastern Washington, and frequently took day trips around the state, stopping for lunch on the way. Besides Gloria, Pete is survived by a large, extended family, including his children, Steve (partner Tina), Renae, Mike and Peter; and his stepchildren, Gloria Kuether, Patty Powell, Mike Dea, and John Spreine. Pete was the middle child in the Cupic family, and he is also survived by older brother, Martin Cupic; and younger sister, Helen Stone, mother of Pete's niece and nephew, Marija and Vince Stone. Pete's grandchildren include Dylan and Nick Cupic (mother, Cindy Neubauer), and Austin and Kyle Cupic. In accordance with Pete's wishes, there will be no services. Pete, you were a good man. We will forever love you to the moon and back.

I played on the same basketball team at EHS with Pete and battled him just about every day during practice. Pete was an outstanding player and also a very good friend. Pete treated everyone with respect on and off the court.

I meet peter when I came to evertt in the 40s and 50s. I always wanted to meet him and his brother Martin again. I'm from Sacramento and after all this time I finally desided to go back to Everett this week and visit may grandpa old house , I'm here in Seattle I thought I'd look up the two brother and found his obituary , although we're never really meet again , I never forgotten them , one time they came to sacramento to visit me but we never stayed in touch. I wish I had never put off this trip so many times. Sorry for your loss. George bacich.

To Gloria, Martin and Helen and Pete's children, my condolences. I will always
remember Pete as a class act and a great help for a young guy starting out in the longshore industry. He was an anomaly at
that time. He treated everyone with respect
and a handshake. I'm going to miss running
into Pete at the bowling alley in the future. Adios my friend.

I'm saddeened to see that Pete has departed. I was a year ahead of him in High School but we spent many a time butting heads on the basketball courts in those days. All the best to his family and friends.
