Ray Bohannon, yes Steve Meltzer was in the Navy and aboard the Rigel during the time period you mentioned. He was a close friend of mine for 45 years and often told me about his time in the Navy

I wonder, did Steve serve in the US Navy around 1968? I remember a good friend aboard the USS Rigel about that time.

Steve, I remember all the times we spent together no matter where we were...AZ, FL, CA, NY, PA, DC, NC. You left a permanent record in my memories. Sometimes, I get sad when I remember you are gone, but you really aren't gone because I remember the laughter (and there was a ton of laughter). Don't forget the tomato juice.

Love,

Marc and Donna

Steve was my cousin. I never met him in real life. I managed to find him on Facebook a few years ago by recognizing his baby picture. He looked very similar to me. I got to know him through his clever comments on my page, and a few Hannukkah cards. Reading his obit has made me so proud to share DNA with him. There was a good guy in my lineage. My sincere condolences to Liz and Beverly, his sister.

I just heard about it ! Steve was incredible. I have such great
Memories of Florida- how he
Sheltered us in your home during hurricanes, the ballgames
he and Don went to. And yet when Don died last March, there he was cheering me on without a clue as to what was going on. Such an unforgettable guy.

My deepest sympathy, Liz, for your loss. Steve was a truly good guy with an incomparable dry sense of humor. He was a very wise person, patient, understanding, kind. You made a great couple. I am sure your heart is filled with so many, many good memories.

Such happy memories of my dear friend, so very sorry to hear you've gone away.

March 6, 2019

I met Steve when he and I were working at a car dealership in Delray Beach, Fl. We had many chats about doo wop music, yard work, and his beautiful garden.
I will miss my friend in the blue vest and black jeans.
Liz, you have my heartfelt condolences. He was a wonderful and caring man.

In loving memory of a kind, wonderful man who welcomed me,a newcomer to the office, and became my mentor at work. Memories of going to model train swap shows with me and my husband to search for that "special" train memorabilia. Visiting the Boca Raton airport to watch and listen as the historic B17,B24, and P51 Mustang flew over on their annual tours. Enjoying dinners, music and conversations together. Steve is a good friend that will be forever in my memories.

With heartfelt sympathy. Hugs and love to you Liz,
Barb

i know he was "the bear" to you, but he was more of a big teddy bear for those of us who knew him and appreciated him as the consummate good, decent guy, as you described him... a real "mensch.

may his memory be for a blessing.

Thank you Steve for staying at a motel while the Na Na's had their annual get together. And for cooking a buffet for us at a previous one. You truly were a women's advocate and loved your wife! Ann, see you in June with bells on.

This is a loss to our dignified circle of friends - oh wait, this is Steve and his great sense of humor and hearty chuckle we are talking about. I learned a few things I didn't know about Steve reading this, and we really like the photo here, even though we never knew him with this dark beard. My condolences to you, Liz - we loved Steve and we love you.

Steve, Liz and I first met when Liz and I were working at the Palm Beach Times in West Palm Beach. Steve and his roommate Ken Simon lived next to me in WPB. He and Liz and many of our friends often hung out at my apartment. This is where Steve and Liz got to know each other. "Hold my foot" was a thing we all used to say and Steve held Liz's foot more than anyone else. I have photos to prove this. And now, wherever Steve's afterlife is, we know that he is holding Liz's foot and we are all rejoicing in the memory that we had a chance to have Steve in our lives and our lives in those of Steve Meltzer and Liz Doup.

We will love you forever, Mr. Bear. I know you knew that. Will never forget all the fantastic moments spent with you and Liz. Especially that trip to San Diego on Bicentennial 4th of July...1976. We shall meet again.
