Steve Shutters Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 10, 2025.
Stephan Lee Shutters, 70, passed away peacefully on September 4th, 2025 after a long battle with Multiple Myeloma. Steve was born on July 22, 1955 to Raymond and Bettye Shutters. He grew up in Columbus, Indiana and retired to Florida in his later years. He graduated from Columbus North High School in 1974. During this time period he met the love of his life, Judy Kilby, and they married in 1978, enjoying 47 happy years of marriage.

Steve was always able to tinker and fix anything, and he enjoyed working on Harley Davidson motorcycles and Lawn Boy mowers. During his youth, he had a wide variety of Mopar Muscle cars including an original Dodge Daytona. He began working at an early age of about 14 , mowing yards, delivering newspapers at 5 A.M., and waxing cars, in order to save money to purchase various cars to fix up. He could tear down an engine, rebuild it and it would run like a dream. Steve loved any kind of cars and motorcycles! He was also an avid gun collector and had a license to buy, sell and trade guns. His interests were wide and varied, as he also collected Meteorites and was fascinated by their extra-terrestrial origins.

After retirement, he and Judy moved to Palm Harbor, Florida. There he became an award-winning Shuffleboard player, practicing, laughing, and spending many hours with his teammates. Steve always had several saltwater aquariums that held very unique fish and interesting live coral, some of which he had nurtured for years. In Florida, he was the go-to person in his community for lawn advice and other handyman chores and was ever ready to help his neighbors when needed.

Steve leaves behind many friends and relatives, who will miss him greatly. He was preceded in death by his father, Raymond Lee Shutters in 2024, and his mother Bettye Darlene Cheatam in 2016. Surviving him in Florida is his wife Judy Kilby Shutters, and his three cats. Family surviving him in Columbus is his sister, Jane Haza, and his beloved Favorite nephew Cody Harbaugh, also two aunts and several cousins.

In keeping with his wishes, there will be no services. Memorials may be made to The Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation or the charity of your choice.
