Steven Bowling Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 9, 2013.
Steven Lee Bowling passed away suddenly and peacefully on August 8, 2013 at the early age of 65. He is survived by his loving wife, Judy Bowling, daughter, Meredith (Kelley) Bowling, grandchild, Parker Bowling, step-son, Eric (Victoria) Weldon, brother, Michael (Mary) Bowling and nephews, Travis and Austin Bowling. Steve was born in Lynwood, CA, on July 2, 1948. He played football for Lynwood High School and Compton College, and then studied at Long Beach State University. He played for the Belmont Shore Men's Rugby Team and coached the women's team; were he met his first wife, Kathy. He became a loving step-father to Eric and Kelley Weldon and father to his beautiful daughter Meredith, born in April 1978. He had an accomplished 25 year career with Mobil Oil as an Instrumentation Technician and Advisor; beginning at the Torrance Refinery in 1983, then working abroad in Nigeria, Singapore and Russia. Steve retired happily from Mobil in 2008, traveling and spending time with his family. He recently returned to work on a contract basis for Becht Engineering in Alberta, Canada. Steve and his loving wife Judy met in the early 1970's and reunited in 1989. They lived in Long Beach, moved to Surprise, AZ and married in 2000. They traveled the world; from living in Singapore for a year, to their adventures in Europe and most recently to New Zealand for the Rugby World Cup Championship. Steve became a grandpa, "Papa" to Parker in December 2006 and was expecting his 2nd grandchild in February 2014. Above all things, Steve was a true friend; from his childhood friends, to rugby teammates, to work colleagues and all those he met along the way. He was strong, intelligent and adventurous. Steve was a great man and will be greatly missed by all those whose lives he touched. A memorial service and reception will be held for Steve at 11:00 a.m. on August 17, 2013 at Recreation Park 18 Golf Course Clubhouse; 5001 Deukmejian Dr, Long Beach, CA 90804. All are welcome to come, share their memories and celebrate his life.

Hi,

My name is Bill Moore LHS 62. When I met my future wife (Alfreda Fred Cotillo) I didn't know it at the time but I also was joined at the hip with a lot of the LHS 66 class members. And I still am today. Meeting Fred came with meeting Steve. She and Steve both bought Honda 160 Scramblers to terrorize the streets of Lynwood. On a side note I got a ticket with Fred riding on the back.

Fred and I have always been in touch with Steve and his wife Judy. They have came and visited us on a couple of occasions. And we have been to class reunions with Steve and even a mini one in Laughlin some years back. Steve was always upbeat and fun to be around. He even made a special side trip to Texas some years back while we were there visiting my brother. At my 40th class reunion Steve showed up because he knew that Judy and Sandy were there to be with Fred. This past June at the Tex McCowan LHS golf tournament Steve and I were two of a foursome. We got to spend more time together in a golf cart and attempting to play golf. Steve was good at any sport he tried. He tried helping me with my golf game. No fault of his I am still the same lousy golfer. Steve and I also shared many emails about politics.

When Fred told me about Steve's passing I could not believe it. He went way to young. He is missed and we think about him all the time. Steve was the glue that brought people together.

As you would say "BOWLING" and couldn't help but feel happy to hear your voice. Cheers to our good friend , Chris Odland
