Steven Hammer Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Apr. 17 to Apr. 18, 2008.

June 24, 1958 - April 4, 2008

A gathering for friends and family will be held to celebrate the life of Steven Hammer, 49, of Vacaville, Calif., at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 10, at the Coquille Valley Elks Lodge on 54942 Maple Heights Road.

Steven was born June 24, 1958, in Washington, to Ronald and Melba (Crowder) Hammer. He died April 4, 2008, in Vacaville, Calif. He was 80 days short of his 50th birthday when his heart, as big as it was, simply gave out.

Steven lived and worked in Vacaville as a journeyman electrician. He started school in Reedsport and when he was in the seventh grade, he moved to Coquille with his family, graduating in 1977. He was an excellent athlete and had won many honors.

He was a kind and generous person who always thought of others first. Steven would call home several times a week, never hanging up before he told his parents that he loved them. He will be greatly missed.

Steven is survived by his parents, Ron and Mel Hammer; his three children, Taylor, 15 and Andrew, 13, both of Phoenix, Ariz., and Keith, 8, of Prineville; siblings, Ron of Ketchikan, Alaska, and Tiffany Howell of Langlois; grandmother, Dorene Rose of Coos Bay; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

I live on the same street where Steve resided. I was shocked and saddened to hear about his death. I would see him drive his white van past my house and he'd always wave to me. Sometimes, he'd stop and chat and I'd do the same. He offered to do some electrical work for my yard at no charge. He was neighborly and kind and a good father.

Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with your family.

You've suffered a tragic loss.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Steve was a great person and athlete at Coquille High and although I graduated from Bandon High a few years earlier I always followed his accomplishments. Stan Goodell/BHS-1972
