Steven White Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 3, 2024.
Steven Hosea White, affectionately known to friends as "SoberDawg", and some lifelong friends remember him as "Donkey", went to his heavenly home on Saturday, August 31, 2024, in Pikeville, Tennessee, at the age of 72. Born on June 24, 1952, in Montgomery County, Maryland, Steven lived a life marked by his deep love for his family, friends, dogs, and his commitment to sobriety.

A handyman by trade and a jokester by choice, Steven's career was built on a foundation of trust and craftsmanship. As a business owner, he shingled roofs and framed houses with the same care and precision he used to construct his jokes-meticulously and with a twinkle in his eye. He was a master of all trades and worked hard at everything that he did. He had no issues with getting his hands dirty and his career was a testament to his hardworking and innovative spirit.

His personality shone brightly in his interactions, always ready with a joke and a smile. Known for his quick wit and ability to deliver a punchline, Steven brought joy and laughter to all who had the pleasure of knowing him. He was a steadfast presence in the lives of his loved ones, consistently demonstrating his reliability and care. He was the kind of guy who never missed a birthday, always ensuring his cards were delivered with a personal touch with his own little dash of humor. He was a reliable and loving figure in the lives of his family and friends, always there to celebrate milestones and offer a word of encouragement. Steven was passionate about the great outdoors, particularly nature walks with his beloved dogs. He was a charmer and self proclaimed ladies man. He enjoyed music and never passed up an opportunity to dance no matter where he was. Traveling always brought him joy. He enjoyed visiting with old friends and family and always made new friends wherever he went. His hobbies were as sweet as the treats he couldn't resist. If there was cake involved, you could count him in. He had a extravagant hat collection that he wore daily. If you saw him out and about, he surely had a loyal dog at his side and a snazzy hat on his head. He had an eclectic sense of fashion that was unlike any other. Steven was authentically himself, without the need or desire for conformity or fitting in. He was truly one of a kind.

Steven knew and Loved Jesus Christ. His faith was an essential part of his life. His spiritual life was deeply personal and inclusive, believing in the power of gathering with others, wherever they might be, to share and nurture faith. He carried this spirit into all areas of his life, especially evident in his love for sending morning devotional text messages and his active participation in Alcoholics Anonymous. His faith was as inclusive as his humor, welcoming anyone ready to share a good laugh or a moment of reflection.

As an active member of Alcoholics Anonymous, he offered support and guidance to many. Steven showed an unwavering strength and a compassionate spirit. He knew that the best support beams in life were the people around him. Steven was a beacon of support and love, consistently showing up for those he cared about. He was also a dedicated friend, a sober companion to many who shared his journey, and a tough individual who faced life's challenges head-on. Whether through sending a thoughtful birthday card, sending his morning check in texts, or his personal dedication to sobriety, Steven showed an unwavering strength and a compassionate spirit. His life was a testament to the values of God, family, fellowship, and the gift of sobriety. His fun loving, kindred spirit and passion for life will continue to inspire those left behind. He will be remembered fondly by all who knew him. His 20 years of sobriety was a badge of honor that he was grateful for in his daily walk through life, and his toughness was as renowned as his ability to make everyone feel cared for. He was a tough old bird all the way up until the very end. He had an attitude of gratitude that he continuously practiced - one day at a time. He shared his life, experience and guidance with others every opportunity that he got. Steven shared his story, strength and hope inside and outside of the rooms in hopes that others would know that it is never too late to turn a new leaf and to overcome any hardships. He always attested that if his Higher Power could save a knucklehead like him, anyone had a chance. He was a proud friend of Bill W. until his last day.

Steven's legacy will be cherished and kept alive in the memories of his loved ones and all who had the pleasure of knowing him. He is survived by his children, grand babies, great-grand babies, his friends from all walks of life, his soul mate (Butterfly) , and his loyal dogs, Archie and Rosie. Steven's departure was preceded by his three younger sisters, his parents, grandparents, and countless loyal dogs, who no doubt welcomed him with open arms and wagging tails.

A Celebration of Life for Steven is being organized and will take place approximately 4-6 weeks from now, allowing those who loved him from various states ample time to make travel arrangements to Tennessee. The exact date and details of the celebration will be announced on social media. Those whose contact information was saved in Steven's phone can expect to receive an invitation message. This will give everyone a chance to gather in Tennessee and share in the joy that Steven spread so effortlessly.

We honor a life richly lived and lovingly remembered by all who were fortunate enough to cross his path. In memory of Steven Hosea White, the man who taught us that life is a bit like roofing-it's best done with care, dedication, and most importantly, a sense of humor that can weather any storm.

"Those who walk uprightly enter peace; they find rest as they lie in death." Isaiah 57:2

One day at a time.
Progress, not perfection.
God could and would if he was sought.
This too shall pass.
Let go and let God.

-Dad, Your kids love you and will miss you.
-Grampy, Your Grand Babies and Great Grand Babies will hear stories of you often and remember you as being fun, goofy, and uncensored.
- Uncle Steve, You stepped up as a father figure when you didn't have to. Thank you for always being there.
- Donkey, Your Maryland friends and AA family will remember the crazy and the fun mixed with love and loyalty.
- SoberDawg, Your Tennessee friends and AA family will remember the man that you grew to become. The man that overcame all odds and did his best to help others.
- Steven, Patty (Butterfly), will forever remember you as her soulmate. She cared for you with love and kindness up until you took your very last breath in your earthy vessel. She loved you unconditionally and will miss you deeply until you two meet again at the heavenly gates.

On my dad's last day here, I asked him if he wanted me to tell anyone anything. He said to tell everyone that he loves them. That is what he was focused on most, that everyone knew without any doubts that they were loved. So if you knew him, He loved you and wanted you to know…

You did your job Dad. You did good… Say Hi to your sisters and parents. Chase down Little Grandma and dance a few song with her. Your dogs ran to meet you, I know. I know they were all waiting for you with love. Give Jesus a hug for me. I'll see you soon. I love you, Forever. - Sarah (Boo Boo)

He was a ray of sunshine every time he came into my office. A wonderful patient and was loved by my whole office staff. We are super sad to hear of his passing but the day he started hospice he was happy with his choice.

Steven was a very dear friend of mine. A fellow knucklehead. I will miss Walking into a meeting and upon making eye contact, knowing he was going to get up, give me a hug and tell me he loved me and was glad to see me. Ever since he met me he has always presented me with special medallions each year when I was recognized for my time in recovery. My heart is truly heavy at his passing. I will miss you buddy. Until we meet again. Save me a good seat.

Steven was always very aware of those around him. I never knew a time that Steven didn´t make sure you were given a "Hello" ( in his own way to acknowledge you and a
"Good to see you" to anyone he knew without missing anyone in a room. His most noted catch phrase was " It´s great to be anywhere alive and sober at ( time of day and the day of week it was. Im very sure the big table of many he knew have already
given him a warm welcome home. Steven will always be in the hearts of many, mine included.
Now a little known personal memory is when Steven and some other members helped me move a few vehicles from one address to another. Unfortunately the one Steven helped with had no working battery and needed towed a good hour out. With no running motor, meaning also no A/C, Steven didn´t hesitate to help or be the one
In the vehicle being towed in 90 degree heat at 45 miles an hour. The trip took over 1 1/2 hours at that speed. Never once did he ever complain about it. He´ll never know how grateful I was for his help.

My first memory of Steven was laying shingles on a roof at my sisters house back in 2016. I remember talking to him about sobriety and him telling me it was good to be sober at 8:42 (or whatever time it was) in the morning. His presence, kindness, and humor made me feel calm and at peace at the time and it stuck with me. I respected him from then on out. He was a great man, and the recovery community (and everyone else that knew him) will miss him dearly. Love you brother. Rest easy.

My first memory of Steven was working on a roof with him laying shingles early in my sobriety. I remember him talking to me about sobriety and telling me it was good to be sober at 8:42 (or whatever time it was) the morning on a Tuesday. I remember feeling calm and peaceful in his presence. I immediately knew he was a good dude. For all the years afterwards I loved and respected him. The sober community (and everyone that knew him) will miss him dearly. Love you Brother! Rest easy.

When I saw Steve in Greenbelt (around the 1980's) he would always tell me how he was the first to kiss me when i was young (around 9 or 10) while skating at the Youth Center. I would laugh because i don't remember that! But he said it was true.

My dad was one of a kind. He taught me how to grow up and has helped to shape me into who I am today. His sense of humor was unlike any other. He will be missed dearly but his homecoming in heaven with Jesus is celebrated! He did what he wanted, when he wanted, up until the very end. He lived life on his own terms and left life in the same way. Rest easy dad. Love you, Sarah (Boo)
