Stewart Levine Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 25, 2025.
Stewart Leslie Levine (1946-2024)

With deep love and sorrow, we mark the passing of Stewart Leslie Levine who left us November 25th 2024 at the age of 78. Stewart was a man of wisdom, humor, and deep compassion-one who truly listened, bringing people together with warmth and understanding.

A graduate of the Maxwell School of Economics at Syracuse University and Rutgers Camden Law School, Stewart dedicated his life to the practice of conflict resolution, believing in the power of dialogue to heal and transform. He practiced law actively for 10 years as Deputy Attorney General for the State of New Jersey and also held roles in corporate settings that included marketing, business development and management consulting. Stewart was enormously proud of having founded Resolution Works and worked as an independent "Resolutionary", helping individuals and organizations navigate challenges with empathy and clarity. His first book "Getting to Resolution" (Berrett-Koehler 1998) detailed his insights on the power of collaboration, and was followed by "The Book of Agreement" (Berrett-Koehler 2003), "Collaboration 2.0: Technology and Tools for Collaboration in a Web 2.0 World" co-authored with David Coleman (Happy About 2008), and "The Best Lawyer You Can Be" (ABA Law Practice Division 2019). In his personal life, Stewart wrote poetry daily as a form of inquiry and meditation; his last publication, "Pilgrim's Path" (Bookbaby 2023) shared this meaningful practice with other seekers.

Stewart is survived by his devoted family including his sister Sharron Friedman, his niece Stephanie Horowitz, his nephew Darren Feller, his stepdaughter Julia Africa and her family, and his cherished grand-nieces and nephew-Eva Horowitz, Noa Horowitz, Amelia Feller, and Meyers Feller. He is predeceased by his wife, Martha Fay Africa.

Stewart embraced life fully, with a heart open to joy and connection. He was funny, thoughtful, and ever-curious-a man who not only loved but inspired love in return. His presence will be deeply missed, but his spirit, wisdom, and kindness will live on in the many lives he touched.

A celebration of Stewart's life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to an organization that fosters dialogue, understanding, or education-causes that Stewart held close to his heart.

May his memory be a blessing.
