Stuart Gallagher Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 21, 2024.
Stuart Robert Gallagher, 72, passed away peacefully on July 18 surrounded by immense love. He fought for his life with courage and dignity, but ultimately, the cancer overcame him. All who knew Stuart were immediately touched by his warm smile and silly sense of humor; he was a friend to all and lived life with excitement and zest. He wore his heart on his sleeve and loved to help anyone as much as he possibly could.

Stuart resided in Traverse City until the age of 12, when his family relocated to Palm Beach County, Florida. In 1973, he married his first love, Iris Dearing. The two moved to Northern Colorado in 1976 where they raised two daughters. In retirement, Stuart split his time between a Largo, Florida home and his beloved Long Lake cottage in Traverse City, Michigan.

He graduated from Florida Atlantic University with a degree in Psychology and was initially a counselor for at-risk youth. He found great fulfillment in helping these youth and proudly spoke about the initiative he took to change their lives. After a few jobs in an array of fields, he realized that the best employer was himself. He started an advertising business which he successfully ran until retirement.

Stu was the youngest of Dr. William H. Gallagher and Hannah Gallagher's three sons. His father, Dr. Gallagher, was a psychiatrist at the State Hospital in Traverse City - Stu had countless memories of being raised on the grounds of such a unique facility. To no one's surprise, he even found the best in that; sharing funny stories about patient interactions and how lovely it was to play in Kid's Creek.

Stuart is survived by his daughters, Kim Gallagher (Chad Schrader) and Susan Street of Traverse City, his grandchildren; Elena, Charles, Nicholas, and Adrienne, and his brother, Morton Gallagher (Jana) of Traverse City and Jupiter, FL. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. William and Hannah Gallagher, his brother, Jerome J. Gallagher, and a half-brother, William Gallagher.

Stu was generous, social, fun to be around, and endlessly affable. He loved life and lived it fully; spending time with his kids, grandkids, friends, and kitty companion, Toby. He loved riding his motorcycle and always surrounded himself with music. If he wasn't snorkeling in Long Lake, he was sitting with you on the boat, with a mixed drink in hand (and making sure you had one too of course). The void he leaves in the lives of those who loved him and had the good fortune of spending time with him is enormous. He will be missed every moment of every day.

A celebration of life will be held on Friday, August 9th from 4:30 PM to 7:00 PM at the Traverse City Elks Lodge, 625 Bay Street. Bring your stories and come ready to share the love.

I met Stu in Florida about 10 years ago and we hit it off right away. We golfed and had a few fine beverages together. He was always one of my first phone calls arriving in Florida. He was vey kind and thoughtful person. He will be missed by myself and Suzanne. Rest in peace my friend.

I will remember Stu best as a kind man who had the gift of being interested in people and really listening to them. I feel I know him best from all the Stu stories I heard over the years. He and Steve shared some great adventures and he will be dearly missed

I met my old buddy Stu shortly after moving to Colorado back in the fall of 1992, we were both working selling some of the first cell phones that came on the market, it was all door to door selling, Stu was really good at it, I was not, I think I was sent there somehow to meet my newest best friend.
The job for me only lasted 2 or 3 months but, my friendship with Stu grew from there over the years.
Me and Stu had many adventures together over the next 30 something years. Stu was a great father, uncle, brother, and friend to most everyone he met.
We ventured out on many trips together , during the winter months we would fly down to Mexico, Costa Rica, Florida, or Belize, as long it was someplace tropical. When we were home in Colorado if we weren´t out skiing you could find us out brew pub hopping on Thursday nights, on Saturday night we would take our kids down to the old Elks club where they had an old bowling alley. On Sunday nights Stu was always up for walleyball with the whole Gallagher family, we were always doing something. I really miss those days!
In spring, summer and fall we went on motorcycle trips around the western part of the country.
Stu was alway up for a great adventure.
I loved Stu, as a best friend and a brother.
I will always miss him, never forget him, and the great times we had together.

We first met on a cruise in March 2017. Stuart (Stü) and I related/connected so well it was just amazing. We had a good long chat on the deck and he later offered to make me a drink which was tasteful . His cocktail recipes were top notch . Stü loved wholly and sincerely, sometimes to a fault. He always made me feel special irrespective of the distance apart . He was fun loving and mostly found him reading ,solving crossword puzzles , hanging out with family and his kitty (Toby).
Rest in peace my dear friend . May the angels light your path . May your heart truly be at peace . I will always think of you . I will always remember you smiling , laughing, singing and whistling . Your voice would always echo in my head. Thank you for being an amazing friend. I hope I was half as amazing a friend to you as you were to me . May your beautiful spirit soar high above the trees, watching over your loving family and friends.
Forever in our hearts.

Stu and I first met in high school. This was in the late sixties; a very turbulent and polarized time. There were distinct tribes that expressed which side of the ideological fence they were on by their hair length, clothes and music. I was immediately impressed by Stu´s lack of any pretense or affection. He never followed any crowd, he was always himself - always an individual, his thoughts and opinions always his own. As I got to know him, I saw that he made little distinction about appearances, social status or age. He was so curious about people that he would (and often did) talk to anyone. For example, my Dad. I think at the time, Stu had more conversations with him than I did! And my dad loved talking to Stu because it was always easy to talk to. He would just be able to connect in such beautiful ways. I witnessed this countless times with people of all stripes. Stuart found people endlessly fascinating. He was just a great lover of people and life! In fact, he was an absolute master of finding the best way to enjoy whatever situation was at hand (usually with little or no money)! I was always amazed at his creativity. His humor, sense of whimsy and play were always on tap, as was his great generosity and kindness. So many great times were spent laughing at ourselves and the world. It was a challenge staying in touch after his move to Colorado, as we were both working and raising families. Whenever we would connect, he unfailingly expressed his pride and love for Susan, Kim and the grandkids.I will miss you, Stuart, you were one-of-a-kind and a great, great friend! It was my privilege to know you and your family!
