So sorry for the family's loss. It's times like these when the loving promises of our heavenly Father can bring us comfort and can soften some of the pain we feel in our hearts. (1 Thessalonians 4:13,14) May God grant you guidance, strength and peace during your time of sorrow.

Stu provided us with intelligent, encouraging leadership at Danbury Public Library and set an excellent example for other library staff members. He worked energetically on behalf of the Library, the community, and our state library association. I am glad to have had the chance to work with him.

I was on the board of trustees of Russell Library when we picked Stuart to be the Director, and I enjoyed many years working with him in that capacity. I admired him enormously and it would be hard to pick his best trait, so many were his virtues. He was quiet but wonderfully competent, keeping a low profile while preserving and adding to the library's place as a beloved institution in the Middletown community. Hortie Kabel and I were long-term members of his fan club. I missed him often after he moved to Oregon and wish I had kept up with him. He taught me many things, big and small, such as that restaurants routinely overcook fish. He said that when he grilled fish, the rule was one minute for each inch the fish was thick. We went to a state library conference of some sort around 1980 where the featured speaker was a "forecaster" (he didn't want to be called a "futurist") who predicted what the year 2000 would bring, such as that General Motors would be making houses on its assembly lines, and people would snap sections onto their houses as the family grew and snap them off when the kids left the nest ("you messed it up--you take it"). The forecaster said he wouldn't predict a female Pope by 2000 because "this Pope [John Paul II, a skier] is very healthy." Stu and I laughed over the guy's predictions nearly two decades later, when so few of them came true. I'm sorry that
cancer brought him down, but glad he had a long and fulfilling retirement. Middletown owes him a debt of gratitude, and so do I. Goodbye, friend. I hope to see you again, but till then, your memory will be a blessing. Sincere condolences to his family and friends.

What a wonderful man Stuart was. I remember fondly the many dinners I attended at the Porter home when they were in Connecticut. Much fun with Kathryn, Stuart, Alex and friends Lana, Ginette and Claude. My prayers are with you for days to come. Love Debra

To the family of Mr Porter Jr. What an incredible life he led. What talents he took to the grave with him. Soon death will be abolished and no more suffering or pain or tears. Rev 24:4,5
