Published by Calgary Herald from Jun. 30 to Jul. 2, 2016.
CHOPRA, Sulakhan Singh
February 24, 1943 - June 24, 2016
It is with utmost gratitude that the Chopra family would like to remember the radiant, joyful and vibrant life of Sulakhan Singh Chopra, who passed away peacefully on June 24, 2016 in Tijuana, Mexico, at Hospital Angeles. The Chopra family would like to thank the team at Hospital Angeles and Baja Medgate for their dedicated, meticulous and compassionate care of him, with special thanks to Dr. Ivan Gomez. Born on February 24, 1943 in Lyallpur District, Punjab, Sulakhan Singh was raised in Bassi Pathana, Punjab. He obtained a B.Sc. in 1964 and a B.Ed. in 1968 from Punjab University at Patiala before immigrating to Canada in 1970. He earned a B.Ed. in 1971 and graduate diplomas in Educational Psychology and Curriculum and Instruction in 1974 from the University of Calgary. Sulakhan Singh married his beloved wife Kuldip Kaur in 1974 and had six children together. He worked as a teacher and librarian in Calgary and Grande Cache, Alberta, before becoming a librarian at the Health Sciences Library at the University of Calgary, where he served for 27 years. After his retirement in 2008, both Sulakhan and Kuldip happily welcomed the expansion of their family, including four grandchildren and enjoyed travelling and cruising together. Sulakhan Singh loved life. He was a quintessential family man, was always quick with a smile and had a "go jolly" attitude. He was also dedicated to the community and was the first Principal of the Guru Nanak Punjabi School at the Guru Nanak Sikh Centre in Calgary. Sulakhan Singh is survived by his wife Kuldip Kaur; his six children, Anita (Jay), Pardip (Karan), Sonia, Karam, Kamal (Richie) and Shanti; his four grandchildren, Jiya, Niyam, Kavel and Mika; his two brothers, Mansa Chopra Singh and Ajit Singh Chopra; and many nieces and nephews and their children in Calgary, the United States, the United Kingdom and India. He was predeceased by his parents, Nihal Singh Chopra and Nand Kaur Chopra, his brothers, Manohar Singh Chopra and Iqbal Singh Chopra, and his sisters Balwant Kaur and Jaswant Kaur and his sister-in-law, Martha Ruth Singh. In accordance with Sikh tradition, the memorial service of Sulakhan Singh will be observed with a complete reading of the Guru Granth Sahib. Those who wish to listen to the reading may do so by attending any day of the week from Monday, June 27 to Saturday, July 2 between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. The concluding ceremony (Bhog Ceremony) will commence on Sunday, July 3, 2016 at 1:30 p.m. Dinner (Langar) to follow. The complete service will take place at the Guru Nanak Centre, Sikh Society of Calgary, 739 - 81st Street S.W., off Old Banff Coach Road, Calgary. Everyone is welcome to attend.

I am deeply saddened to hear of the loss of my dear colleague Sulakhan. I worked with him from 1988 until his retirement in 2008, and he was always a 'ray of sunshine' here in the library. He would always greet me with a cheery "Hey chief!" when I came in to work and was always most helpful with both staff and library patrons alike. He will be missed and fondly remembered by many. Deepest condolences to Kuldip and the entire family.

I worked with Sulakhan Chopra in the Medical Library for 7 years and enjoyed working with him and I liked his quirky sense of humour. He was very well liked by many of the physicians who used the library and were looking for references. Sulakhan was very diligent and patient and I am so sorry that he has gone and I wish his family my best wishes and sincere condolences.

It was a pleasure knowing you, a joyful man, who was full of life. I can't forget 1970 trip to lake Louse with you and Iqbal. Another jolly moment of buying a an exact duplicate replacement car for a brokendown vehicle that we left at Dr. MC's place.
, you may remember. Rest in peace.

I attended Sulakhan's retirement party from the Medical Library. It was an event that I will always cherish, especially since he had so many of his family there. I treasure having known him.

Whenever I would meet him at ashram or at Yellow Point Retreat, I was always struck by his very sweet, gentle and truly humble loving presence. He clearly embodied a beautiful model of Sweet Remembrance as Gurubhai in Love of Sawan/Kirpal/Ajaib. My condolences to all the dear Chopra family. "Duniya de vich ruhan te sada nahiyo rahandiya"

Kuldip, we are very sorry for the family's loss. Singh was a great friend, and we should have tried harder to keep in touch.
