SUSAN BORNSTEIN Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Nov. 16 to Nov. 17, 2018.
BORNSTEIN, Susan (Botvinik) You would have been lucky to know Susan, who passed away on Thursday, November 15, 2018 after her inspiring fight with a glioblastoma which she managed to hold at bay for two years and eight months. Susan cherished her friends, her children – Alison and Daniel, their spouses, Craig Kapilow and Joanna Bornstein, and her grandchildren Jack, William, and Imogen. As a devoted social worker, Susan provided guidance to couples, individuals, and families for more than 40 years with the same positive outlook that served her and anyone who knew her. She served as a board member of Wildflower. Having met in 1967 and married since 1971, Susan and Stan Bornstein were in love for more than 50 years. Born in Westwood New Jersey, receiving her BA from Tufts University and her MSW from Columbia University, Susan moved to the Boston area in 1971 and Newton, Massachusetts in 1976. She leaves behind her brother Gregory Botvinik, brother-in-law Ronald Bornstein, her nieces and nephews, her deeply loved and loving family and countless loving friends of whom she said "You can never have too many." Funeral services will take place on Sunday, November 18 at 11:00am at Levine Chapels, 470 Harvard Street, Brookline. Burial to follow at Sharon Memorial Park, 40 Dedham Street, Sharon. Family and friends are invited to gather on Monday from 4:00-7:00pm at her late residence. In lieu of flowers, gifts can be made in memory of Susan Bornstein to Wildflower (www.wildflowerforkids.org) or to The Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Dr. David Reardon's Research Fund, P.O. Box 849168, Boston, MA 02284. Checks to Dana-Farber should include Dr. David Reardon's Research Fund in the memo section. Levine Chapels, Brookline 617-277-8300 www.levinechapel.com

Shocked and saddened to learn "Suzy" (as we knew her) passed away. Growing up next door to the Botviniks she was a model daughter and sister. While her passing leaves a great void, I hope her family and friends remember how blessed they were to have her in their lives and that wonderful smile. - Louise Garcia Lusardi, Brick NJ

Bernie and I loved being next door neighbors with Susan and Stan these past 17 years. We loved living next to someone who had such a big smile. Susan was the type of person who always made you feel happy. Like the Lass's, Bernie and I also bumped into our next door neighbors miles from Chatham Road in Boothbay Harbor, Maine. Susan and Stan were celebrating a special anniversary. They invited us to join them in a champagne toast. It was lovely. Susan's positive take on life will always be an inspiration to me. We will miss her very much.

Sometimes you have to go to Ireland to have lunch with your next door neighbors, and that's where Eric and I had lunch with Susan, Stan and Dan one May. We believe Daniel had been studying abroad in Scotland, so Susan and Stan made a trip over to travel with him. Ever since we moved to Chatham Road in 1998, our driveway chats with Susan and Stan often turned to discussions of world wide trips taken, and the next one being planned. Their enthusiasm for travel always inspired us, with Susan saying more than once that "Venice is Disney World for adults" and we agreed! It has been so wonderful living next to Susan and Stan all these years, getting to know Alison and Daniel, who are just as kind and thoughtful as their parents. They always ask how our girls are doing, and Susan and Ellie even went to see Abby perform as Lady Macbeth in high school. We feel so honored to have known Susan, with her warm smile and easy laughter, often out gardening and showing one of her many friends another beautiful addition to her flowers. Whenever we see beautiful flowers, we will remember Susan. Her memory will be cherished always.

Susan we will miss you
Our friendship began with a coincidence that led to a friendship lasting 47 years. In the summer of 1971 we heard voices speaking English while on our respective honeymoons at Lake Como and it was yours and Stan's and of all things we all lived near each other in Boston. Ever since then we have always stayed connected. We will always cherish memories of sharing good times together shopping at the original North End Italian market, marking important life cycle events of the birth's of our children & grandchildren and since we moved to Florida having visits together.
Your journey and battle agianst GBM with such courage and grace is to be admired and an example to be followed.
We will miss your beautiful smile, sweetness, intelligence and calm personality that led to a perfectly balanced marriage with Stan.

What a privilege it is to know Susan and Stan since we were kids 50 years ago. I cannot imagine how much she will be missed by her family -- you share wonderful memories and her love forever.

Susan and I go back to years when we were both little girls playing with dolls. Our parents were very close friends and we spent many Happy Occasions and Holidays celebrating together. both i their home in Westwood NJ and ours in Brooklyn, NY. Susan and I traveled together to Israel after our HS graduations and she was the first one in our family to meet my prospective husband of now 51 years. We will forever cherish those happy memories and years of friendship.

Since we were college suite-mates in 1969, I remained friends with Susan who always had a great, warm smile and loving presence. My husband and I have been friends with Susan and Stan since then also, though we lived on opposite side of the U.S. I will always remember our fun lunches at museums in Boston, dim sum in San Francisco, and her laughs and smiles.

Many thanks to Susan from Grampa Mike (I'm sure I can speak for him) and me for the blessings that are Alison and Daniel and Imogen, William and Jack. Without her (and Stan too) the Bornstein family would not have had so many joyous years.

To Susan's family and friends,
I am so sorry for your loss. I had the gift of knowing Susan thru Wildflower. My children Isabella and Jordan were the first family that Susan guided thru the summer camp process while we were grieving. She stayed close to us for more than 8 years and will always be in our hearts. With our Deepest Sympathy.
