SUSAN HOROWITZ Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 18, 2011.
SUSAN WELCH HOROWITZ Susan was born in New Jersey, spent her teenage years in Texas, where she was a competitive diver, and most of her adult life in New York City before she moved to Santa Fe, drawn to the city by its natural beauty and by the Santa Fe Opera. She passed away in her Santa Fe home on Monday, March 14, 2011. Susan played many roles: Loving mother, caring wife, political activist, social worker, philanthropist and scholar. She had advanced degrees from New York University and Columbia University. In Santa Fe, Susan was a strong supporter of the New Mexico Community Foundation and the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival. For 25 years, she was a board member of the Washington, DC based Center for International Policy. While living in New York, she was a financial partner of the Nation Magazine and a patron of many local and national non-governmental organizations promoting peace and social justice. Susan was preceded in death by her husband, David H. Horowitz, the former co-chief executive of Warner Communications and board chair of MTV. She is survived by her two sons: Adam Horowitz and Justin Weyerhaeuser; her two sisters: Carol Brown and Judy Holy; and her stepchildren: Diana Horowitz, Marilyn Horowitz and Roger Horowitz. A service will be held on Saturday, March 26th at 11 a.m. at The Church of the Holy Faith at 311 East Palace Avenue, Santa Fe, NM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the New Mexico Community Foundation, 343 East Alameda, Santa Fe, NM 87501.

Time can be measured in moments, and feel like many lifetimes. Susan came into my life, a few years ago. She became a dear, and special friend in a moment. Memories will give us much joy, and to her beloved son Justin and wife Emily and extended family my love and prayers as you say your final good-byes to a one of a kind Mother, wife, sister, and friend. The birds will be taken good care of by Susan, I will remember and miss you, always. Love, Connie Britton Sugar Land, Texas
