Susan Landis Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 16, 2025.
Susan Raye Landis, age 69, died at her home in Murphy, NC, on August 9, 2025. She was born on September 9, 1955, in Chattanooga, TN.

Susan is preceded in death by her mother, Johnnie Eldridge; brother, Stuart Eldridge; and sister, Donnie Kerr Castillo.

Susan is survived by her loving husband of 42 years, Frank Landis; daughters, Marie Landis (Allison Christofis), Claire (Garrett) Davis, and Lucy (Michael) Ellis; granddaughters, Amerika and Sunny; and sister-in-law, Lisa Eldridge. She is deeply missed by her extended family and many lifelong friends, notably the Virgos and Women's Group.

Susan was a graduate of Chattanooga City High School (1972) and UTC. She worked with psychiatric patients before becoming a school psychologist in Hamilton County for decades. She was a mentor to many.

Susan was fun to be around. She always knew how to cheer up whoever was lucky enough to be in her company, which was good because she did not tolerate wallowing. She loved old movies, colorful attire, and dogs with soft ears.

She enjoyed camping, and spent many summers on road trips across the U.S. and Canada. She had a wonderful sense of direction - in both the literal and figurative sense. She fervently believed in our moral obligation to leave the world a better place than we found it. Most of all, she loved being with her family. Her marriage to Frank is a shining example of a loving, lifelong partnership.

In 2013, Susan and Frank retired to Murphy, NC. She was a proud lifelong Democrat and was involved in the Tri-County Democratic Women's group. She ran for the NC State House of Representatives in 2020 to give voters a choice. She loved living in the mountains of Western NC and watching the deer (and an occasional bear) from her living room window.

Susan was diagnosed with kidney cancer in 2021. The family is grateful to the medical professionals who cared for her: Dr. Elizabeth Wiles, DO, of Blairsville Internal Medicine; Dr. Aaron Schueneman, MD, of Georgia Cancer Specialists; and Hospice of North Carolina (especially CNAs Jasmine and Krista). Susan's daughters are proud of and eternally grateful to their dad for his years of devoted, loving care.

Susan will be missed tremendously and her absence felt by many. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Arrangements for a memorial celebration will be announced at a later date. Susan has requested that you wear something colorful! (And Frank hopes that you be joyful!)

My heartfelt condolences go out to the Landis family. Susan was a lovely and caring person. I worked with her off and on for a year when I was an AP at the old E. Brainerd Elementary.

We haven't lived in Chattanooga since 1986 and have missed a long, beautiful chapter in the lives of the Landiss family. Frank and I became good friends before Susan and Stuart became our best friends, and of course what I remember of the girls is VERY long ago as in babies.

Nevertheles, we've kept up somewhat, have similar interests and causes and mutual friends - and I know we would have been good friends if we'd not moved away to Clarksville. Accordingly, I ache for your loss - and wish all love and healing for family and friends in the days, moments, years ahead.

Love from
Peggy (and Stuart) Bonnington

Susan was an incredible person. I was lucky to know her through her daughter Claire, who is one of the kindest, warmest, most sincere people I know, and I can see how her amazing mother played a huge role in making her the person she is, as well as her wonderful sisters. I admire Susan's confidence, her strength, and her conviction to do what's right, even when it's hard. She left behind a wonderful legacy in her family, and my heart goes out to her nearest and dearest.

I worked alongside Susan in Hamilton County and those were some of my best school years. Her humor and knowledge kept us all on track and I learned so much from her.
When we moved to the west coast Susan, Frank, and the girls made a cross country camping trip and we spent some time together. I remember three playful busy girls whose parents simply adored them. Lovely times.
I know she leaves an impossible hole to fill. May her memory be a blessing.

I would like to extend my deepest sympathies. I worked with Susan at EBE. She was an amazing human! I learned so much from her. She made difficult IEP meetings better with her calming voice and easy delivery. She had a knack for bringing out the best in all she touched. I am very thankful that our paths crossed. I know she will be missed!

My sincere condolences to Frank and her daughters. Susan was one of a kind. She got me involved in things that have changed my life. Never was into politics until Susan. Took over for her in NCSTHL when she asked me. It was hard to say no to her. I will miss her so much. RIP dear friend.
