Susan Webb Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 5, 2023.
Susan Voss Webb of Birmingham, Alabama passed away on Thursday, November 2nd, with her husband of 56 years and two sons by her side. She was born in Boone, Iowa on July 24, 1940, and is preceded in death by her parents, John and Pearl Voss, sister Mary Ann Voss, and son William Walter. Susan enjoyed a decades long teaching career in elementary, secondary and higher education, after earning degrees from Clarke College in Dubuque, Iowa, and Saint Louis University in St. Louis, Missouri. She married Bill in 1967 at St. Bernard's in Osceola, Iowa, and lived in Chicago, Illinois until 1975, when his work brought them to Birmingham. Years later, they relocated to Andalusia and Jasper, then to Roanoke, Virginia, and Brookfield, Connecticut. They returned to Birmingham in 2001 and joined St. Mark's Parish, where Susan served as Coordinator of the Parish School of Religion for 13 years. She continued her passion for teaching as "America's Traveling Schoolmarm" and was a speaker for the Alabama Humanities Alliance. Susan developed a love for the study of early American education, having been inspired by her mother who was a one room school teacher. She was a presenter and proud member of the Country School Association of America (CSAA), a nonprofit made up of volunteers who work to preserve, understand and appreciate early country schooling across the nation. Susan is survived by her husband, Bill, and sons, William John of Atlanta, Georgia and Stephen Matthew (Bridget) of St. Louis, Missouri. Three grandchildren, Jacob, Lucas and Madeline Webb also filled Susan's life with abounding love and joy. Faith, friends and family were the cornerstones of her life, and she will always be remembered for bringing people together with the many creative gatherings she hosted, especially during holidays. The family wishes to thank the medical staffs at both St. Vincent's East Hospital and UAB Hospital Birmingham for their dedicated care and compassion, as well as the St. Mark's Parish community for their enduring love and support. Memorials in Susan's name may be made to St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church Building Fund, PO Box 380396, Birmingham, AL 35238, or to the Clarke Fund (https://www.clarke.edu/giving/donate-to-clarke) at Clarke University. A Mass of Resurrection will be held at 10:30 am on Monday, November 13 at St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church, 7340 Cahaba Valley Road, Birmingham, AL 35242. Visitation will be an hour prior to the Mass.

Ms Webb had a special place in our hearts at St Marks. My childhood memories of PSR are filled with her and the passion she poured into it. Susan never forgot a detail, and made me feel special every time we caught up after mass through the years. We will miss you.

My prayers and God´s blessings for her family. She will be so greatly missed. Susan was my classmate and friend from junior high school thru high school. We were friends and cheerleaders together for 4 years and have kept in touch with birthday wishes in July and Christmas cards all these years. She planned several amazing class reunions thru the years in Osceola Iowa. I will keep your smile and our friendship memories in my heart forever. Rest in peace my friend. I love you and miss you. Susan was my colleague in church ministry. She was always kind and generous, trusting and collaborative, eager to share the goods that she had experienced with others and open to what others had to share, too. For so many students and families, Susan's life reflected Christ's love, spending time with people individually, teaching them about the Catholic faith and preparing them for receiving the sacraments. She will be missed and will remain in our family's prayers.

Susan was my kindred spirit. We talked a great deal about the opportunities we´ve had through our annual country school conferences that allowed us to share our passion for one-room schools, meet new people, enjoy old friends, and experience so many interesting places in the interest of country schools. She was already preparing for the Toledo Conference in June of 2024, but fate intervened.

For our conferences, I will remember Susan for baking alphabet cookies and hauling them from Alabama to Nebraska, creating her Annual Conference Copy Book, role playing a prairie teacher, presenting the story of Noah Webster (her favorite), Julius Rosenwald Schools, Booker T. Washington & Tuskegee Institute, Reward of Merit Cards, Learning the Latta Way, Rediscovering McGuffy, and One-Room School Activities. Her conference presentations and community programs engaged her audiences with countless hand-on lessons.

I will remember Susan Webb as "America´s Traveling Schoolmarm," performing the poem..."Over in the Meadow," stanza after stanza from memory while her "scholars" made all the hand movements to imitate the action in the verses. It was her favorite. After her performance, we visited a carousel museum and a clock museum where we enjoyed even more Americana. Susan loved this country and everything about its past.

My husband and I traveled with Susan and Bill to Alaska in 2022 and they were both delightful travel companions. I made her a picture book of the trip and she cherished it, showing it to everyone she knew. Through those same photos I will always think of Susan. We had many plans for the future and I feel a terrible void already....Susan Fineman
