T. Cowley Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Feb. 23 to Feb. 25, 2009.
COWLEY , T. David November 4, 1934 - February 20, 2009 David (Dave) Cowley, beloved husband, father, grandpa, and friend, passed away peacefully with his wife and family by his side on Friday, February 20, 2009 at the age of 74 years. Dave was born November 4, 1934, the first of five boys to Norman and Annie Cowley in Calgary, spending some of his formative years in Hillhurst. He met and married the love of his life, Elaine Leier, his "honey babe"; together they raised a wonderful family, a son and four daughters. He found his niche in sales, opening his own company, Cowley & Keith Real Estate in 1972. The company grew to become one of the largest real estate brokerage companies in Canada by 1981. The company was recognized by its hot air balloon that was seen soaring over the Calgary skyline or flying during the Stampede. Dave started various companies working closely with his son Darrol, even up to the time of his passing. A lifelong resident, Dave has always been committed to this city and community, serving two years on the Calgary Police Commission, a director of the 1988 Winter Olympic Committee, founding president of the Lake Bonavista Community Association, sponsor of the Cowley & Keith Colts Bantam Football, associate director of the Stampeder Football Club, member of the Young Presidents Organization (YPO), Kinsmen Club, Rotary Club, and a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon). He was a furious defender of what was right, always concerned about the disadvantaged. He just loved people, he would talk to anyone, really everyone; he had a real zest for life. Dave loved the great outdoors, walking, biking, jogging, and he completed two New York City Marathons. His greatest joy came from the lives of his family and friends. Dave is survived by his wife Elaine; son Darrol (Esther) Cowley; daughters, Sandi (Bill) Sefcik, Wendy (Dave) Farnsworth, Diana (Bryce) Karl, and Barbie-Jo (Jamie) Vincent; twenty-six grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren; brothers, Stan (Gloria), Norman (Eileen), and Ray; sister-in-law Jeanette; as well as countless close friends and associates. He was predeceased by his mother and father, Norman and Annie Cowley; and by brother Warren. God threw a pebble down to earth, those ripples from this man have touched each of us to be a little better, reach a little further, and give a little more just as he did to us. Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at McINNIS & HOLLOWAY'S Fish Creek Chapel (14441 Bannister Road S.E.) today, February 25, 2009 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Funeral Services will be conducted at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Parkland Chapel (14540 Parkland Boulevard S.E.) on Thursday, February 26, 2009 at 10:30 a.m. Graveside Service to follow at Okotoks Cemetery. Forward condolences through www.mcinnisandholloway.com . Special thanks to Tom Baker Cancer Clinic, the doctors, nurses, and staff. In living memory of Dave Cowley, a tree will be planted at Fish Creek Provincial Park by McINNIS & HOLLOWAY FUNERAL HOMES, Fish Creek Chapel, 14441 BANNISTER ROAD S.E. Telephone: 403-256-9575.

David
What can I say about my oldest brother. Dave truly was a person I always looked up to. He was a brother who truly believed in me. When I was a teenager and passed my driver's license, I phoned Dave and Elaine to see if I could borrow their car. Without hesitation they would let me. Although it was only a 1949 Ford, it felt like a Rolls Royce to me. The best thing about borrowing the car was that Elaine had accidently spilt a whole bottle of perfume in the car and boy did it smell wonderful. They really trusted me with their car. I was on top of the world. Dave also co-signed a loan for my first car, because he knew I wouldn't let him down.

Dave once told me when he was at the top of his career. "I could lose everything tomorrow, but I'll always be grateful for what I have today." I never forgot those wonderful words. Dave and Elaine always welcomed us as an equal whether he was at the top of his game or not.

Dave thankyou for being my mentor, my brother, and most of all some one I 've always looked up to. You will truly be missed by everyone you touched in life.

Norm, Eileen, Nancy, Tim and families.

Sister Cowley and family,
I was saddened to hear that you have lost your husband and father. .. for this life. I remember with fondness the many hours I spent at your home. I always felt welcome, because of your kindness and love. Many of my friends fathers, made me a little nervous, but not Brother Cowley. He was kind and always had a happy comment for me. I remember feeling so privileged to feel part of your family, if only for a meal, overnight or for a few hours. Brother Cowley was a real special man and father. I felt he was fair, fun, energetic, optimistic and full of life!! Even though I live far from Calgary and it's been many years since our last hello, I have many treasured memories. Many of which have shaped my life into what I have today. Thank you all, for your great examples. Please know that I mourn with you and will keep you in my prayers -- for your strength and comfort. I wish I could attend the funeral services, to honor someone special who was a great example to me -- your father and husband. I will be thinking of you all.

Dear Diana & Family:
I'm so sorry to hear of the loss of your dad. I have such fond memories of him and your whole family as we grew up in Lake Bonavista: rollerskating, swimming, playing on the trampoline and going to church on Sundays. Your dad built homes in every sense of the word.

I would like to send my love to the family of Brother Cowley. My sister and I spent many great evenings as the guests of Sandy, Wendy, and the entire Cowley Family. Brother and Sister Cowley treated us as if we were a part of their family. I will never forget how much in love Brother Cowley was with his beautiful wife, Elaine.

My thoughts and prayers are with your family at this time.

Dear Elaine and Family,
I remember seeing David's photo around Bonavista on several occasions but only met him once or twice. I was eight when my father, Blake, bought our family's home in Lake Bonavista; and remember thinking, everytime I saw a Cowley & Keith sign, 'Wow, he must be important.' I thought he actually built our house himself ;) I always loved our home there and my sister, Melanie, was lucky to have you all as friends. My condolences to you all. Please give Diana my best as well. I remember her teaching me aerobics at Family Fitness Centre.

Dear Elaine & Family: I am so sorry for your loss. He was a hard-working, kind, and generous man. He had an energetic spirit about him that attracted people, and made it easy to love him. As a kid, I used to love to hear him tell stories about his life. I also loved to hear of the funny experiences my parents would have on their outings with "Dave and Elaine." They have many happy memories. My prayers are with you all.
