Tab SHORI Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and/or The Province from May 13 to May 14, 2011.

SHORI, Tab July 18, 1936 - May 1, 2011 The story of my brother Tab who left us May 1st in Kamloops, BC. Born at VGH to Janki and Jogi Ram Shori, went to Van Tech High, graduated Yuba City High, California. Gifted spanish guitarist, played drums and sax. Tab started performing on stage at age 13, picked up his guitar later, to record R & B with Harry Walker & The High Fives. Declined to tour N. America with Chubby Checkers (Wsserman's column) to start the first R & B Studio in Vancouver, working 3 jobs, teaching, playing at clubs, and driving a tandem. Tab received a scholarship in the Arts, recognition in the professions, on ski patrol, into boxing, took his Harley to Mexico, but first taught himself Spanish. Fluent in 4 languages. Travelled Europe to perform in London hotels, and the Obrei in New Delhi. A wrangler and MC for the Bar Q Guest Ranch in Ashcroft, his love for horses was on the top of his list with music. Opened up Tab's nightclub in Kamloops, hiring local bands, and knowns as the Platters. Performed in prisons and for the Sr's. His kind heart, humour, and laughter will be with us forever. Survived by his sisters, Smitra (Calif), Sylvia (Vancouver), Scotla (Langley), daughter Simone (Kelowna), nieces and nephews in Canada and the USA. Tab will be never forgotten. Celebration of my brother's life 604-275-3892.

I will miss my uncle dearly, I know he is in a better place looking down on us "gone but never forgotten".......

From his sister Smitra (California): We were like twins and always did things together. We had our fights, but we always got together when we played our guitars.
We had fun when our little sister Sylvia joined us on stage and we acted like The Three Stooges--alot of laughs and good times. It's not goodbye, but 'til we meet again after the resurrection.

Tab came up to Whitehorse in 1967-68 to play in the clubs (along with the Gust brothers and many others). As a young local musician, I met him and became a friend. I always remembered him as a cheerful, happy encouraging presence, always ready to help a younger musician. The last time I saw him (probably Kamloops), he invited me to drop in anytime and have a cup of java. I always remembered him with affection and wondered what happened to him. I just Googled him on a whim after all these years, and found I was only just too late to see him again. RIP Tab, and thanks for your great music and your friendship and encouragement all those years ago. It would have been nice to have that cup of java.

Tab and I go back to the late 50's, we spent many hours at the practice sessions of the Hi-Fives with Harry Walker and the rest of the group. Tab was a Catwalker [or Spook] and I was a Midnighter, we rode many miles together both on bikes and his 58 Impala Convertable. We also drove lumber truck for Walkers Carriers and went to the same mills every day. The last time I saw him was at his place in Kelowna. This picture was taken in front of the original GVMC Clubhouse on Boundry Rd. We had good times together and I will miss him.

I first met Tab in the late 60s at Beaverdam Lake and over the next several years he taught me and many like me an enduring love and respect for Canada's cattle country and its horse culture. He was great company whether it was riding, picking, or just hanging out listen to his narratives. One of my favourite 'Tab' songs was from the movie Midnight Cowboy. I hope he is 'going where the sun keeps shining through the pouring rain' as for most of us he slips into Cariboo folklore. To his family and close friends - My condolences.

Tab was one of the most unique individuals I have ever met. Our family spent many summers at the Sundance Ranch and Tab was already a fixture there. A superb horseman, a great story teller with a song on his lips and his guitar in hand and always a warm smile and a permanent twinkle in his eye. I have often wondered what became of him.
Happy trails to you Tab!

Tab my guitar hero, coolest of the cool.
My band the DeVilles followed Harry Walker and the Hi Fives into the New Delhi Cabaret 1961/62? as house band.
I recollect the last thing he said to me.

"WATCH YER TOPKNOT AND KEEP YER POWDER DRY"
So long Tab catch you later at the big corral.

I knew Tab back in the late 50s when I had a band. Aside from his musical talents, my strongest memory was his personality. Always a kind word accompanied by a great smile. I often wondered over the years where he had gotten to, and now I know. May he rest in peace.

Tab and I rode many trails together at the Bar Q and the Sundance Ranch. His entertainment in the lounge was legendary.
Tab accompanied my wife, Dorothy, and myself in 1977 when we went shopping for Dorothy's engagement ring. We came home with a guitar! Tab brought music and smiles to so many people. He will be missed.

Tab and I rode motorcycles together in the mid 50's. I remember meeting at the family home on East 10th Ave and some of the adventures we shared. Only today did I realise we shared the same birthday. I've often wondered how you were doing, Tab. Fond memories indeed .....

My condolences to the family. I took guitar lessons from Tab when he had a small studio on Victoria Drive. It was approximately 1964. I had no idea that Tab was gifted in so many areas. I'm sure he will be sorely missed by those who knew him much better than I.
