GODWIN, Edward W. (Ted) OC
August 13, 1933 - January 4, 2013
Ted Godwin, beloved husband of Phyllis, passed away on Friday, January 4, 2013 at the age of 79 years. Professor Emeritus Ted Godwin graduated from the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology and Art in 1955. He worked as an art director for T.V. and as a neon sign designer until 1964 at which time he began teaching at the University of Regina until his retirement in 1985. He studied with Barnett Newman, John Ferren, Jules Olitski and Lawrence Alloway at the Emma Lake Artists Workshop from 1959 to 1965. Ted achieved national recognition as a member of the Regina Five, which included Ronald Bloore, Kenneth Lochhead, Douglas Morton and Arthur McKay, following their 1961 exhibition at the National Gallery of Canada. Godwin has been exhibiting since 1955 and his works are included in many major corporate and private collections, as well as the National Gallery of Canada, the Ontario Museum of Art, the Glenbow Museum and the CBC. In 1974, he was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy and, in 2005, was made an Officer of the Order of Canada. Godwin was also an honored recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Silver Jubilee and the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medals. Ted, who grew up playing on the shores of the Bow River, was a lifelong supporter of Ducks Unlimited and is a friend of Bill's. He had 27 years in the program. Besides his loving wife of 57 years, Phyllis, Ted is survived by his daughters Teddi Driediger and Tammi (Gerald) Shanahan and granddaughters Jessie and Larissa, his sister Dr. Ruth Godwin of Victoria, B.C., and his nieces and nephews Brenda, Brett, Grant, Sandra and Kevin. He was predeceased by his parents, and his brother Bruce. Dear Phyllis

Ted was a light in the life of so many like myself. I am glad I had the opportunity to tell him so before he left for that " other plane of existence", as he would say, where he has many friends and family to greet him. He will be missed in body, but lives on in spirit. He left enough advice, love and creative beauty for many generations of family and friends who knew him, but more significantly, for those of the future who never met him in person. His art will always speak for him, in the poetic, passionate voice he had in life.

Dear Phylis, we are greatly saddened to hear of your beloved Ted's passing. His contributions to the art world are forever cherished, but not more so for the very dear Husband, Father, and friend for so many.

May his golden canoe glide sweetly along along the Bow,endless colours brightly flashing amid the deep cool wood.

Ted truly loved the outdoors and fly fishing. He showed his love through his book "Lower Bow" and the paintings for the book. As a passionate advocate for the river, he supported Trout Unlimited Canada through donations of his work and was chosen as Trout Unlimited Canada's Artist of the Year for 2010.
Our condolences go out to Phyllis and the family on Ted's passing. He will be missed.

Dear Phyllis and Family,
For me all the words you (Kathy) used are beautifully put. Just tell them ... even with the distance I always thought about them... Ted's great advice for life and the kindness to take his precious time to share his knowledge and his art with me. It was great to get to know other kind people through him also... such as Bob and Bill who played together.
May peace be with them! I extend my best thoughts to their family.
Love Pedro

Phyllis and family,
I have fond memories of Ted from the 70s at university in Regina. When I think of him it's of a man who was a real character, a free spirit, his love of creating art, and the mischievous twinkle in his eyes. It was impossible to experience a dull moment while in his presence. My condolences to you.
Sincerely,
Shirley Miller

Dear Phyliss, our deepest sympathy to you and your family.
Ted was such a great neighbour. he will be dearly missed. He became a mentor to Pedro Chaffe, our guitar playing Brazilian "son " in 2002. Pedro looked forward to jamming at your house every Tuesday evening. The words he wrote in Pedro"s year book remain as an inspiration to all of us:
"Journey to the treasure......treasure the journey.
May god be with you at this difficult time.

Ted was a giant of a man, a big heart. He guided me through the art world jungle and was always their when I needed him. Ronnie and I have great memories of our times together. Ted always shared his thoughts, this studio and his time. We had great parties and wonderful quiet times, gatherings at the Copper Kettle, Chinese food or a late night pizza after a card game. His art will continue to challenge and inspire others, like it has inspred me.We were lucky to know him. Our hearts go out to the family. Barrie & Rhonda

Dear Tammi and family,
I am very sorry to hear that you have lost your dear dad. I have many wonderful memories of hanging out at 3010 College Ave in Regina. I always enjoyed Ted's energy and zest, and Phyllis made the best after-school snacks ever! I know the love and support of friends and family will help you through these sad times.

Many of us experienced Ted as the larger than life art teacher at University of Regina. His memorable dialogues were liberally peppered with sharp opinions and the straight goods, all served up on a plate of compassion. Occasionally the serving was so large, you'd be hard pressed to find that plate, but rest assured, it was there. Ted has always been an inspiration to me, professionally and philosophically. Thanks for the spark that you put into so many of us, Ted!
My condolences, Phyllis. I only know you through Ted's many glowing mentions of your name and I've always imagined you as an amazing woman.

Having known Ted for 25 years, primarily via Friday nights at Lakeview, I know many people will miss, but never forget, Ted. I cherish the "Bow River" paintings contained in a wonderful book Ted signed for me years ago. It meant alot to me then. It means even more to me now. Peace,Ron T
