Ted Helberg Obituary

HELBERG
Ted Steven
Ted was born in Toledo, Ohio on July 30, 1953 to Sam and Tonia Helberg and passed on February 12, 2017 after an extended illness.
Attended Deveaux Grade school, where as a husky boy he focused on eating and smiling.
A Sylvania High School graduate (1971), during those years he changed his appearance while excelling in softball, bowling, golf, and tennis; he was a natural athlete. While living in Israel, he participated in the Maccabi games as a softball player. He loved playing and watching sports the rest of his life. He also really enjoyed his friends and let his presence be known at any gathering.
He attended  Ohio State University, University of Arizona and did graduate work while in Israel.  He also lived in Paris for 20 years and his most recent years lived in Minneapolis to be closer to his kids.
He was involved in opening and operating two successful Monroe Street restaurants in Toledo, O' Henry's in the 70's and The Beverly Hills Cafe in the 80's.
He practiced as a psychologist and spoke at a number of conferences in Europe and the U.S. He specialized in addiction counseling, including time at the renowned Hazelden facility in Minneapolis. He started one of the first privately run addiction clinics in Paris.
He was fluent in 4 languages, and often volunteered his services including a missionary trip to Haiti after the earthquake where his French language and counseling skills kept him in demand there for weeks.
He loved to travel and did so extensively and enjoyed people. Always ready for a good time and a good laugh, and known for his willingness to offer help to anyone in need.
In Minneapolis he was affiliated with the local chapter of Children of Holocaust Survivors.
His brother Tom said “I always said you could drop Ted anywhere in the world and not only would he survive, but would thrive, contribute and cultivate a rich friend filled life.”
He leaves behind his greatest pride and joys, his son, Jacob Helberg of San Francisco, and his daughter, Roxine Helberg of Los Angeles.
Survived also by brothers, Tom Helberg (Shelley) and Sandy Helberg (Harriet), nieces Blair Pearl, Marisa Lavin (Ben), Taylor Helberg; nephews, Simon Helberg (Jocelyn), Mason Helberg; great-niece, Adeline and great-nephews, Wilder Helberg and Shay Pearl. Predeceased by loving parents, Sam and Tonia Helberg.
Friends will be received at the home of Tom and Shelley Helberg at 4722 High Oaks Blvd, Toledo, on Sunday, February 19th, from 6-9 p.m. Private services are being held for the family.
Contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation, Congregation Bnai Israel, or the charities of your choice.

I thought of Ted tonite. We were in IA together---my Dad Phillip Schwartz operated Siegle's and House of Kosher Foods.. I googled him and saw the sad news. He will always be remembered by many--and wow what a life he created after high school. I went to DeVilbiss High.

I heard the news of Teddy's passing when I saw his name in the Book of Remembrance yesterday on Yom Kippur when I was in Toledo to attend services at Congregation B'Nai Israel with my dad, Philip Markowicz. A childhood family friend and fellow Sylvania High School colleague, I remember Teddy with much fondness. He was a dear to meet up with me and my mom when we were in Paris many years ago and was kind to attend her shiva when she passed. I belatedly add my heartfelt condolences to his brothers and the entire Helberg Family-

To Tom and Shellie and family, To Sandy and his family,
To Teds children,
I have fond childhood memories of time spent together with "TEDDY" as he was called and with all the cousins. So many laughs and Ted created so many of them.
He will be missed and though time together was long past I did get to spend some time with him not that long ago and for that I am grateful .We shared many old stories. Wishing you all good memories of him now and forever , forgetting things that don't matter .

Grateful to have known him, albeit for a short time. His sense of humor, wit and intelligence was a mix I've witnessed very few times. God bless Ted and the family.

Ted and I had our fair share of capers and maybe some other people's share too. We had lots of practice in high school. As roommates in Tucson we had a lot of fun with the rest of the people who lived at the ranch. Some really outrageously good times (Debi, Greg, & Ann could vouch for this as could Cindy C, Pattie B & Neil). I was hoping to see more of Ted with his kids living in California, but it just wasn't meant to be. When a guy like Ted who is larger than life dies it is a body blow to all who knew him well.

Tom, Sandy and the rest of the family, my thoughts are with you. We all loved Teddy.

If God exists sure Ted is now sitting by his side with sister Teresa, Moses, Jesus, and some other very few who spent their life saving others with love and care, trying to help them to find the path towards happiness and serenity.
If God does not exist, he does'nt know what he is missing not knowing this wonderfull man.

He made me laugh all the way through high school - helping me to take myself less seriously. I'm so sorry I didn't get to see him again as an adult. It doesn't surprise me that he went on to help so many people and live such a rich life. My deepest condolences to the family.

My condolences to all of Teds family. My name is Brian L. from Minneapolis. I met Ted about 10 years ago and what a privilege it was to do so. I will miss our talks concerning life at large. Ted was so very kind to me at a tough period in my life. He showed me how to be a better person day in and day out. Truly a great loss for so many people that were touched by him.

This photo will touch the hearts of all who knew Ted and his family !

Many fond memories of Ted going back over 55 years. I have a significant scar to show for it. Also remember fondly hanging out with Ted at the Beverly Hills Cafe until he left for Israel. May G-d give the family strength during this time of sorrow. Brent and Ricki Rubin and family

Ted was uniquely gifted; smart, funny, entertaining & determined. He filled the world with his gifts, giving back as much as he could, following in his wonderful parents example. I'll miss his hilarity & seriousness, helping & healing. A Gifted Giver & accidental Tourist/Traveler, Sylvania's own
