He helped me when I was a Rutgers math PhD student in his teaching assistant training course, by videoing my teaching and explaining how I can teach better while he and I watched the video together, and even though my teaching was subpar, he didn´t make me feel like a failure, so I have fond memories of him and I wish his family the best.

I will always be grateful to Professor Butler for being my faculty advisor and professor when I was a Math major at Rutgers in the 1970s. He was definitely one of the most personable and passionate Math professor that I had. It was quite a unique learning experience sitting in his classes as he would write out everything he said on the blackboard so we could take notes verbatim, making learning and studying so much easier and enjoyable. He will be missed dearly and RIP.
