Terry Wayne Van Valkenburgh (August 22, 1944 - December 9, 2024)

Terry Wayne Van Valkenburgh, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on December 9, 2024, in South Jordan, Utah, at the age of 80, after a long battle with Cerebral Amyloid Angiopathy.

Born on August 22, 1944, in Kingston, New York, Terry was the oldest of four children to Donald and Augusta Van Valkenburgh. Growing up on the family farm, Terry learned early the value of hard work, a lesson he carried with him his whole life. His siblings, Craig (Judith), Brion (Pat), and Donna (Andy), looked up to him as a role model and appreciated his dedication to both family and work.

Terry married his high school sweetheart, Karla Serdienis, on January 28, 1967. Together they built a life of love, raising four children: Pamela Dixon (Dave), Lonny Van Valkenburgh (Tava), Monty Van Valkenburgh, and Marcia Whitman (Charles). He always made sure to be there for his kids whether it was helping with homework, coaching their sports teams, or teaching them life lessons. His favorite piece of advice, "The choices you make now can and will affect the choices you can make in the future," stayed with his children and he was right.

Terry began his career as a lab technician in the medical field but found his true calling in computers, a field that suited him perfectly. His career took him to California, Texas and Utah, where he found both success and fulfillment. After retiring he continued to consult, staying connected to his passion for technology.

Outside of work, Terry had a love for fitness and weightlifting. His spiritual journey began in the mid-70s when he and Karla joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS). Terry became well-known in his community for his selfless service, whether it was leading projects, helping with church events or mentoring youth. He loved coaching youth sports and was always ready to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. He also served as a Scout leader, sharing his own experience as an Eagle Scout. He was the only scout in Woodstock Troop 34 to earn his Eagle Scout award.

Terry is preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Augusta Van Valkenburgh. He leaves behind his wife, Karla; their four children; and eight grandchildren: TeTori, Zealin, Tahi, and Koro Dixon; Kaelyn, Cope, and Cash Whitman; and Tylee Van Valkenburgh. He is also survived by his siblings and many friends who will miss him dearly.

Terry's life was a true example of hard work, kindness, and love. He leaves behind a legacy of service to others and a deep commitment to his family. His warmth, humor, and unwavering support will be remembered by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.

There will be a small grave site gathering at Oakmont Memorial Park, 2099 Reliez Valley Rd., Lafayette, California 94549 on Tuesday December 17, 2024 at 11:30am.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Mayo Clinic Alzheimer's Disease Research Center.

Dear Uncle Terry, you will be so very missed. I have the fondest memories of visiting you and Aunt Karla growing up. You would pick us up wt SLC airport in your big van and always have dinner in your warm cozy home ready to greet us. We would play football in the front yard and go bowling at night. We would watch NFL and cheer on the Vikings, of course! We also always rooted for the Jazz unless they were playing the Lakers :) You and Aunt Karla took such great care of us on our visits. You made your place a home away from home for us. When my family relocated to Utah in 2020, I found comfort in knowing you were just down the street. My kids got to know you a little better whether it was going to Cash and Cope´s football game with you and Aunt Karla or checking out Clifford the snake in your basement or celebrating my Dad´s 70th birthday all together. It makes me so happy that we got to spend quality family time together during that year we lived so close. I feel so lucky to be your niece and I find peace in knowing you were greeted in Heaven by my Dad upon passing, along with our dearly departed Uncle Bill. We will miss you so much. You raised a beautiful family, Uncle Terry. Job well done. Rest in Peace. We love you.

My Uncle Terry was always the very strong one and big brother to my mom (Donna). I would love to go and visit when I was young to see my grandpa (who lived with him and his family), Uncle Terry, Aunt Karla and my cousins. He taught me how to do a hook shot when I was 16 and during one visit we went to an ice cream parlor and he let me get a huge dish called "the Earthquake!" Uncle Terry was always a pillar of strength to me. I love him and will miss him. What an excellent example of what a family man looks like.

He took care of me when I was little, we had Thanksgiving in Danville I remember the good times. We all used to dance to the monkeys band.

In high school, I was a freshman and Terry was a senior, always trying to live up to him; Track star, Latin club member, all around great guy. He gave me the nickname of "Moose" because I had physically tackled the gym teacher. That nickname stuck with me throughout high school and beyond. whenever he called me that, he would have a huge smile on his face. I knew it was a term of endearment just from him.

My Dad was always there for us. Whether we needed a place to live or other support in life he was there. I will never forget his kindness and guidance throughout my life. I love you Dad and I know you´re looking down upon us with Turk and your parents. Rest in peace.
