Thelma DeWitt Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 19, 2025.
Pownal - On September 16, Thelma Marie DeWitt peacefully passed away at her cherished home in Pownal, leaving behind a legacy of love and strength.

Born on August 12, 1940, in Pownal, Maine, Thelma was the daughter of Floyd and Marie Keith. Growing up in Pownal with her five siblings, Thelma attended NYA before leaving school to help support her family. It was in high school that Thelma found the love of her life, William DeWitt, whom she married in 1958, embarking on a remarkable 53-year journey together. While Bill was away in the service, Thelma made the decision to purchase her childhood home without him knowing. Her independence and determination were clearly showcased.

Becoming a devoted homemaker, Thelma lovingly cared for her family while her husband pursued a real estate business, always supporting his ambitions, and would often say she was his "half-ass-secretary".

Thelma and Bill had spent years exploring many destinations. Their adventures were not limited to just traveling; they also enjoyed their time at their camp and home, where they had made memories that would last a lifetime. Thelma cherished her role as a mother and took pride in raising her children, which extended to her grandkids and great-grandkids, keeping her young at heart and full of joy.

Her passion for life was evident in her love for gardening, spending time in the kitchen, and sharing her culinary creations with those she cherished. Thelma's warmth and generosity touched the lives of many, as she shared her life's adventures with family and friends, leaving a lasting impact on those around her.

Thelma was predeceased by her husband-William S. DeWitt, brothers-Victor Keith, Charles Keith, sister-Marilyn Willey, grandson-William R. Dyer, and great-granddaughter-Gwen Fowler and is survived by her two siblings, Camila Robinson and Floyd Keith, as well as her three children and their spouses: Jeffrey and Maureen DeWitt, Thomas DeWitt and companion Elizabeth, and Ramona and Dennis Dyer. Her spirit lives on through her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, friends, and family.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the Friends in Home staff, caregivers, and Northern Lights Hospice for their compassionate care and support, as well as to many friends and neighbors.

A celebration of Thelma's life will take place at her home in the field, where she hosted annual parties, on September 27, 2025, from 2-5 pm. All are welcome to join in honoring her memory with an open-house style gathering and light refreshments.

In honor of Thelma's legacy, in lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in her name to the Barbara Bush Children's Hospital, a meaningful tribute to her love for children.
