Theodore Fairchild Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 9, 2017.
Theodore (Ted) M. Fairchild, Jr. of Brookline, Massachusetts passed away early Sunday morning April 9th after a long and courageous struggle with advanced prostate cancer. He was surrounded by his loving family at the home he shared with his devoted wife, Karen Hilliard. Ted was born in Johnstown, Pennsylvania and, as a newlywed in 1964, moved with his wife Nancy and his infant daughter, Kari, to the Greater Chicago Area to attend a Masters Seminary Program at Wheaton College. Religious studies were a guiding force in his life and often informed his career path. In the Chicago area, he was the Director of Young Life, a Christian fellowship that gave support and guidance to adolescents. In the early 1970's, Ted co-founded The Eccentric Circle, an educational film production and distribution company. In 1974, he transitioned the company to Washington Depot, Connecticut to provide a more rural and nurturing environment in which to raise his family. In the early 1980's he joined and expanded the development team at Kero-Sun based in Kent, Connecticut. From Connecticut in 1987, Ted and Nancy moved to Boston after their son finished high school. In Boston, Ted enjoyed a 30-year career in executive development and career management consulting. He developed and directed the Senior Executive Service program for the career management consulting firm Lee Hecht Harrison's Boston office. He was a member of their national task force on executive coaching during the early years of the development of executive coaching as a new discipline. Ted founded a private consulting practice in the later years of his career – Fairchild Leadership Alliance. He worked with Drake Beam Morin, Keystone Associates, and New Directions — all leaders in the field of career management. Ted's career and executive development experience involved consulting with and coaching leaders from many major corporations including IBM, Fidelity Investments, Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, The New England (now owned by Met Life), The Boston Company (now owned by Mellon Financial, Fleet Bank and Bank Boston (now merged with Bank of America), Dreyfus Corporation, Blue Cross and Blue Shield, Polaroid, and Gillette. Ted was an active participant in professional and community activities and served as an industry leader on committees with the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Board of Trustees with Greater Boston Rehabilitation Services, and a leader with Greater Boston Interfaith Organization. He recently spent a wonderful year living with his eldest daughter, Kari, and his grandson Griffin in northern California. This is where he adopted the canine love of his life – Sweetie. Prior to his time in California, he enjoyed 3 joyful years with his 2 youngest grandchildren when his son's family moved to the Boston area to be closer to him. Ted was an avid Red Sox and Patriots fan and enjoyed sharing the joys of his passionate enthusiasm with his eldest grandson, Griffin, in particular. Ted had a beautiful singing voice and was actively involved in many choirs and other singing groups throughout his life, most recently JourneySongs, an interfaith hospice choir. Music was one of his deepest passions and he passed this on to all of his children. Attending his daughter Amy's musical performances in the Boston and New York areas were some of his proudest moments as a parent. Ted spent his last years with his wife Karen Hilliard at their home in Brookline Village, Massachusetts. Ted is survived by his wife, Karen Hilliard; his brother and sister-in-law Gary and Carol Fairchild of Florida and his sister and brother-in-law, Paul and Carol Jeanne Thompson of the Dominican Republic; his daughter Kari Fairchild of Sonoma, California and Amy Fairchild of Waltham, Massachusetts and his son and daughter-in-law Ted Fairchild and Claire Desroche of Hawaii; Ted's 3 adoring grandchildren – John Griffin Scially and Clement and Saina Fairchild and many nieces and nephews around globe. He will be deeply missed. Flowers can be sent to Trinity Parish, 11 Homer Street, Newton, Massachusetts 02459. I keep thinking about things that I want to share with Dad and reach for my phone to call him, and then.................. I miss him and this grief is still hanging around pretty viscerally. I hope that wherever you are, Dad, that you are full of peace and are graced by the Presence of something spectacular and beyond our comprehension.

I experienced a very strong memory of Ted last evening when I was out to dinner with a friend to "Farm Burger" in San Anselmo, CA. As I was waiting in line to place my order, it dawned on me that one of the last times I had been here was in the company of my daughter, Griffin, Kari and Ted.

Like an apparition, I could see the group of us sitting at a table near the front windows passing around burgers as they arrived at the table. The kids and Pappa dug in while Kari was still working out which was whose, carmelized onions or no, sweet potatoe fries or regular fries.....
Ted was downright serious about eating and thoroughly enjoying his burger when it was determined that there had been some mix-up; the waiter brought another, placing it in front of Ted and he enjoyed that one matter-of-factly just as much!

There was a chunk of time when the kids were in high school where it felt like Ted had always been there; he was present for holidays and birthdays and school events and we knew the habits of Sweetie and it was really quite remarkable how Kari had just conjured up this comfy home and routine that had Ted in it as a staple and which was of comfort to us all as an extended family.

Golden days, golden memories. Thank you, Kari, for sharing your dad and placing him into our lives....

Spent many delightful hours in conversation and exploration with Ted. Always learned from his fresh perspective and friendly demeanor. We shared stories about our common area of work and his experiences were always a delight to hear about. Very sorry for the loss of such a bright and vital man. chuck
