Theodore Pasternak Obituary

Published by The Daily Times from Apr. 6 to Apr. 7, 2017.
Theodore “Ted” Pasternak, known to his many music students as “Mr P.” (or “Oh Great One”) passed away peacefully of natural causes on April 4th. Born in Chester, PA on May 24, 1956, Ted was the youngest child of Raymond and Helen Pasternak and attended Penncrest High School before earning an undergraduate degree from Philadelphia Musical Academy, a Masters Degree from Neumann College and a Ph.D. equivalent from Villanova University. He was the Band Director at Cardinal O’Hara High School, taught Advanced Conducting at University of the Arts, and most recently taught 4th and 5th grade Band at Scenic Hills and Sabold Elementary Schools in Springfield, PA. Ted’s passion for music was known by all. As a young boy, Ted spent countless hours playing his clarinet, and together with brother Ray recorded albums and played live gigs as Ray and the Rhythm Makers. He was a gifted educator, an inspirational conductor and an entertaining performer. Ted took equal pride in playing at Carnegie Hall with legendary greats such as Andrea Bocelli and Luciano Pavarotti or playing in the Band Room with his many devoted students. He instilled his love of music in his two daughters, Reveka Anne and Tristen Jax, who inherited their father’s extraordinary talent and keen appreciation for musical performance. In addition to music, Ted also brightened the world with his wit and good nature. He was a practical joker who donned “plastic teeth” and amused many with his comedic antics. He was a devoted Three Stooges fan, a sci-fi movie aficionado, and spent countless hours curating homemade fireworks shows. Ted was a formidable backgammon player with his fiercest competition being brother Ray and friend Alan Byar. He loved shuffle board, constructing his holiday toy train village, and launching homemade rockets. Unknown to many, Ted was an entrepreneur and founded “Ted’s Rocket Shop” as a young boy. He lived a life full of humor, love and kindness to all. Ted is survived by his sister Dianna Nusz (Pete), brother Raymond, daughters Reveka and Tristen, former wife Maureen (Duffy), and nephew Richard Doering as well as many relatives, friends, students and colleagues. All are invited to Ted’s Funeral Mass on Saturday, April 8 at 11:00am at St. Kevin Church, 200 W Sproul Rd, in Springfield, PA. Calling hours are between 9am-10:45am. WE INVITE ALL MUSICIANS TO BRING THEIR INSTRUMENTS TO JOIN IN PLAYING “WHAT A WONDERFUL WORLD” as a tribute to Ted at the end of mass. We will then gather outside the church to play LET”S GO BAND. Following a burial at Lawncroft Cemetary, friends and family are invited to celebrate Ted’s life with food and music starting at 2pm at A.J. Stephen’s Crab House 105 S MacDade Blvd, Glenolden, PA 19036. Please bring your instruments and your favorite Ted stories. In lieu of flowers the family welcomes donations to the Ted Pasternak Music Scholarship Fund, care of S.A.E.F. 111 W Leamy Avenue, Springfield, Pennsylvania, Delaware County19064-2396.

My brother-in-law is visiting from California, it's 2025; he said, "Down that road was the most endearing little boy who had the best rocket collection. He was quite an entrepreneur." We were saddened to read of your loss but so pleased to read of his very successful life. God bless you all.

Hello. My name is Vernee' Fryer. I am just now seeing this over a year later since his passing! If there's someone reading this please allow me to have information to contact one of his family members. I was one of his students from Cardinal'O Harass, class of 1997. He taught me how to play the alto sax. He truly was an inspiration to me and to many other former students. I learned so much from him and spent many hours practicing on my horn daily. Mr. P. was the type of music teacher who could hear a wrong note played from a mile away. I recall all too often the days I spent in sectionals and private practice playing my horn. Mr. P. would be in his office in another room with his door shut. While playing, I would hit a wrong note or hold a note too long or too short. After many failed tries in getting a particular part right, I would play, hit a wrong note or chord and keep going. Mr. P. would suddenly swing open his door, stick his head out and say, "Vernee', I heard that. Go back over that measure again...it's ta, tee, tee, ta, ta, etc.," That's just one of the many examples of how great a musician and teacher he was! When we played together as a band, he could hear a single incorrect note, from a single section and know exactly who it was! The man had an ear! Now as an adult although I presently don't play the alto sax now, I am the same way when I hear a wrong note. It drives me crazy! Thanks to Mr. P. Ironically, I typed his name to locate him to see if he was still giving sax lessons. Then I unfortunately came across this sad news. There was no one like him. He will always be remembered. Thank you Mr. P. for everything you taught me. Thank you for understanding my undying love and desire for studying music. May you rest in peace and join God's heavenly music band. May you make heavenly music up there the angels envy. Until we meet again my friend.Vernee' FryerClass of 1997Alto Sax

The Pasternak and Nolan families go back pretty far, my Dad was Teddy's Godfather and his Mom and my Mom were friends since they were teenagers.

Diana and I have been friends from "Diapers to Depends", so I've known Ted since he was born and that Cherub face with the perpetual smile and deep dimples has never changed!

He looked like an Angel, and that allowed him to get away with so many pranks, especially with his mother (who was pretty strict) but he would look at her with those big eyes and devilish grin, and she would just melt and say "My Theo "!!! (Diana & Ray weren't so lucky)

Ted has given so many the gift of laughter and fun and so much more - obviously the love of music, and friendship forever!

Keep smiling Ted, until we meet again !!!r

Ted, or Mr. P as we knew him, was a positive influence on the lives of many. He showed us students at COH that it was essential to have passion about what you do. I'm sorry if I ever gave him a hard time as a student. His choice of literature has proven so important to my musical development. Just last weekend I was blessed with the opportunity to see a performance of the WDR Symfonie of Rachmaninoff and Tchaiskovsky and naturally I would not of enjoyed it as much had Mr. P not introduced us to these two titans from the inside, as performers, way back in 1989.

I took clarinet lessons from Ted in high school and in college. His enthusiasm and love of the instrument was contagious. I remember driving home, excited and wanting to practice! It was purely a coincidence that I was placed at Scenic Hills for my student teaching. I was not with Ted, but assigned to general music. I watched Ted work with the band, and saw how much the students enjoyed rehearsals and lessons. I loved seeing him teach- especially when he rewarded his lesson groups with PEZ. Something so small could be very exciting! He invited me to play clarinet duets after school, still taking every chance he had to impart his knowledge. In recent years, I played under his baton in the Upper Darby Sousa Band. Even for adults, he made music fun, but still demanded a high level of musicianship. I feel so privileged to have worked with Ted. He was a teacher and mentor who always believed in me, and encouraged me to do my best. I strive to pass on his kindness, generosity, and humor through my own teaching.

Hello....My sympathies to your family. You do not know me...but I saw of Ted's passing through a friend on FACEBOOK. I am an oboist and I went to the Pennsylvania Governor's School for the Arts with Ted in the summer of 1973. I remember him as an amazing musician, clarinetist and friend.

We TOTALLY lost touch... I went on to Oberlin and Juilliard and moved from Pennsylvania. I often thought of him and where he could be but never heard his name from friends.

In any case, I am sad for you, his family, but you are lucky to have been blessed with him in your lives. He was a special person.

I know Cally Banham wellI only regret Ted's name did not come up in our conversations so that I could have spoken to him while it was possible.

,,, Ted you were undeniably the best clarinetist I've ever known actually the best clarinetist a lot of people ever knew. You were so much fun in college, PMA, University of the Arts. Always made us laugh always performed well above the others and Mr. Dunlap always loved you, especially when you'd fall asleep in his class. I'm so sad that God has taken you to Himself and left us behind with our memories of you. You had wonderful parents and you have a wonderful Brother Ray and a sister. You were truly blessed with Talent and excellent social skills. Always loved you my friend and I am saddened to have to say goodbye for now. Too young and loved by all. Deepest condolences to you everyone surrounding the loving memory of Ted. A man with a heart as big as the ocean, endless humor, passion for life and ultra world-class musicianship...this was Ted. My lifelong friendship with Ted began in elementary school and held its strength through the years even with a number of years hiatus after high school. When Ted and I reconnected, we both remarked how you know a lasting friendship when after years apart, you pick up the phone and continue the conversation like no time had elapsed at all. That was me and Teddy. Here are a few of the many adventures we shared: Spending time at Ted's house with his loving and supportive family and the countless hours of listening to music, eating tasty snacks and meals prepared by his mom (to this day, I give credit to Mrs. Pasternak for introducing me to cream cheese and jelly on a cracker), making a movie theater in his basement and charging admission for anyone willing to watch old super-eight sci-fi movies like The Blob, the one and only Ted's Rocket Shop, taking the trolley from Media to 69th street to see local Saturday afternoon monster movie television host, Dr. Shock and going to the creepy magic shop, going to favorite movies like The Godfather, dressing up in three-piece suits with real Stetson dress hats along with another classmate and walking all around downtown Philly like we were junior Mafia men (we always felt lucky we were never "bumped off"), rehearsing the epic big band led by Ray Pasternak - "Ray and the Rhythm Makers" - on Sunday afternoons at the union hall in Chester, playing gigs for $10 booked by an agent named Al Stango (his name says it all) and so much more. Neither one of us had ever attended a high school reunion and when our 40th class reunion came up in 2014, we talked it over and agreed if there was ever a time to attend a reunion, it was this one. We had a great time and classmates showered Ted with greetings, well wishes and were astounded by his musical talent when we played some duets we prepared for the occasion. As a life-long professional pianist, I've played with incredible musicians throughout my career and to be able to play some great tunes with Ted will stay with me for the rest of my life. Memories endure and peace comes in knowing Love never dies. We never say goodbye, we say Ciao (until we meet again).

Please know that my thoughts and prayers are with you during this most difficult time. Our daughter Erin remembers working with you when you hosted District Band at Cardinal O'Hara High School. Thank you! I had the pleasure of working with you at Sabold. We were asked to provide music for the PARENT-VOLUNTEER LUNCHEON. Your rendition of SUMMERTIME was unbeatable. Thank you! Your untimely passing has taught us all a lesson: live life to the fullest, love what you're doing, bring joy to everyone you know. You never know when you'll be called to be with our Heavenly Father.

As a student of COH (class of 87) and Mr.P made the band a wonderful and inviting place for all of us. Not only was he musically brilliant, he always believed and encouraged us to be the best we could be. He also instilled in many of us a passion for music of all kinds, a passion that I am proud to say continues on through my own children.

Thank you Mr. P for the music, the laughter, and the love. You will always be in my heart.

To my dear "sister" Diana, Ray and Richard,
There are no words that can truly express the sadness that is in my heart for your loss of a brother and uncle. There are so many wonderful memories of living the next street over and growing up with all of you in Chester -- remembering when Ray and Ted were born and then your moving to Middletown. While I have only seen Ted briefly over the years, Diana has kept me up on all of his adventures and antics. He was so well loved and will be greatly missed. Holding you all in my heart with much love.

I was so sad to hear of Ted's passing. I was hired at Scenic the same year as Ted and really liked him from the start. I was a brand new teacher and he came in with such experience that I was just in awe of how confident he was and what he was able to teach the kids. There was never any doubt how much he loved sharing music with everyone. Those fake teeth instantly came to mind whenever I thought of Ted! Such a fun and talented guy! Sending prayers!

Back in 1997, right after graduating high school, I took summer lessons with him to help me in college, as a music major. I went back a couple years later for more lessons and I still use the music he gave me with my students today.
I ran into him a few years later and he told me it took him 20 years to get a public school job which made me realize not to give up.
He was a big part of helping me get where I am today musically.

I had the privilege of studying clarinet privately with Ted from 8th through 12th grade. He was an amazing musician, teacher, and mentor. I would not be the musician or music teacher I am today without his guidance and positive influence. I enjoyed playing along side him in shows and enjoyed seeing him perform in his group Sentimental Journey. I hope he continues to play amazing by the stars.

Mr. Pasternak made music fun. I will also never forget his love for Pez candy!

Ted taught flutophone lessons in my third grade class for many years. He would tell the kids to always have it handy...you never know when you'll need it to play Happy Birthday. He was such a joker ~ he always had his fake teeth in his pocket ready to pop into his mouth when his back was turned and then surprise unsuspecting kids and adults. I'll always remember that strain of music Rhapsody in Blue that he would play and will think of him whenever I hear a clarinet. I passed by his house in the summer and saw Ted running behind his lawnmower sporting the biggest set of headphones ever. He made our days brighter with his laughter and his beautiful music. Heaven's orchestra has just gained a master of music and a sweet gentle soul.

Mr. P was the whole reason my kids even started band. We first met him when my oldest was in 3rd grade. She came home and excitedly announced that she was getting a flutophone and that Mr. P was going to teach her class how to play lots of songs. Ted's contagious love of music and the arts as well as his simple gift of laughter and true love for his job as a band director made everyone around him smile and want to do their very best for him. He was quirky and silly and made the kids feel comfortable and loved. My daughter, Victoria (11th grade at SHS) shared a special bond with Mr. P....they both loved and collected Pez dispensers. Mr. P would show her all of his new Pez and Victoria would bring him "refills" to keep his supply in stock.

We are so sorry for your loss and will keep your family in our thoughts and prayers. Rest now, "Oh Great One", and know that the music will go on in your honor. You will never be forgotten!
